When do you guys light the larval tank?

I've been using room lighting for the larval tank. Tomorrow will be day4. Should I add a small light for the tank? Are their eyes developed enough at day 4 to handle it?
Thanks
Kevin

I'm a newbie, too, (I'm on my second tiny batch) but my advice is try a little light and they'll immediately let you know if it's too much (heading to the bottom of the tank). That may be a stressful way to determine lighting, but it helped me decide how much to use (they do need enough light to sight their food).

I've been using a swivel incandescent lamp rather than a flourescent light since I can easily move it closer or further away, although until I take the black paper off the sides (around day 5) I'm especially cautious (I've mostly stuck with a low wattage flourescent until that point).

I have been using a fluorescent clamp light, nothing special. In one spot I change the light bulb to something more bright after a few days, but just so I can see to siphon the tank and there are no dark corners.

Well I've added a small fluorescent strip not much wattage over the tank and they don't seem phased by it. Day 4 with minimal losses. I think I'll start bbs day7 as some are not very large. What do you think?
Thanks,
Kevin

Are they perculas? Mine are and I start bbs as early as 5 days per Wilkerson's book, although she recommends a day or two later for other types.

ya Kathy they are percs.
Half seem to be undersized for bbs right now. I think they may just choke on them if I add them. What are your thoughts. Will they try bbs even though they are too large or will they stick to rots until they can eat them. I would think they would try and choke.

It probably doesn't hurt to wait a day or 2 to play it safe. I'm not the best to reply on this topic. I got my first batch through the bbs phase without losses (only to kill them off when I tried dry food by polluting the tank). My current (second) batch are at day 10 but I've had some unexplained loses in the past several days.

I've had very small batches - both times I caught 20-30 from the main tank and had only 10 surviving the first morning. (I'm working on the adults' nutrition.) I'm down to 4 with this batch. My batches are so small that I worry about the bbs growing too big before someone eats them.
