When safety measures are unsafe

The reason I am saying this is becsause I doubt it was the battery part that shorted. I think it was the 110 A/C part that tells it not to run when the power is on that shorted out. But if it was in fact the battery part then the breaker should not have tripped anyway.

I'd have to agree with this-- not that my opinion is worth much--- but that damage does NOT look like a battery burnout. There was way too much current causing that damage for it to be a battery.

You mentioned power flickers---- I suppose it's possible that the power flickering (which was causing them to come on) could have damaged whatever mechanism they have that senses a loss of AC current.

Either way, I'm personally considering just plugging in a couple small cheapo air pumps directly to a UPS. I don't have a B11--- they seem to have a good reputation, but this kinda wigs me a little...

Ok, curiosity got the better of me and I opened up my B11. I had the switching compartment open once before, but that was some time ago and given this particular incident, I thought it might be a good idea to have another look. Several things concerned me somewhat. The AC power leads are riveted to the small circuit board holding the relay, four diodes, a resistor, capacitor and a coil (not sure it's a coil, just a guess). The rivets are fairly snug, but it's a mechanical connection and I would prefer to see some solder there as well. The AC power cord has no strain relief that I could see, which is another concern, given that the leads are only riveted to the circuit board. If someone inadvertently yanks on the AC cord, or if there is a continuous strain on it, that could cause a failure/short. Other than that, most of the components appear well mounted and soldered. So if the quality control is not up to par, you may end up with a unit with loose AC connections which is bad news. The relay is quite small and is rated at 1 amp for both the AC and DC side. Did not find a fuse anywhere in there. It's reassembled now and back in service on my tank.

Did you ever get a response ?

No I did not--I am very disappointed in the manufacturer of this product.
My next move will be a visit to the local fire department to what they can do about this.

What a great idea! I wouldn't have thought of the fire dept.

I'm not a fireman (or firewoman for that matter), but if it isn't on fire, what can they do? Does the fire department have unique legislative powers in Canada? I'm pretty sure if I took such a thing to the fire department here, they'd just look at me funny and tell me not to buy another.

We may never know what happened. This may be an isolated incident.

I just feel bad because I've recommended these for years to many people here on RC. I'm not so sure I'll continue to do that.

I will keep mine in service, but I've been watching them very closely. I switched from MH to T5 and one factor was the heat the MH produced and the associated fire risk...

Our fire department performs investigative services for us---they will look into what happened or come out to the house.
I just don't want them coming to the house----too many extensions running in the basement;)

Okay, I'm sensing a bit of a contradiction here. Are you sure the safety hazard isn't you, Capn. ;)

And be sure to call the cops if someone steals your drugs.

the only halides I have are above the display tank;)

Glad things didn't turn out worse Cap'n.

I know some dogs that deserve a steak and a good long belly rub. They saved your reef tank, your home, and probably your life. ;)

Definetly my lab has bee saving my life since a puppy.
It brought high blood pressure and my weight down with the 1.5 hour walks we used to have.
Twice it stood over me when I knocked my self out on hidden ice in the winter--barking to get attention.
Now this----I don't know what I will do when she dies.:(

Does anyone in the states have a number to call Penn Plex---I only get an email access from here---and they are not returning my emails.
I think this is a terrible way to run a company.
