when to add protein skimmer

new to the business - I have a guy who does maint and did set up. 55 gl tank established 6 months - still no protein skimmer needed as per my fish guy - is this right?

That is really a trick question. What kind of tank, FO, FOWLR, reef? Bio-load and what you want to keep and how you maintain the tank all play a part in this decision. Some people never use a skimmer, but that is NOT the norm. Give more details, and you will probably get many more answers.

I agree- and if you go the cheaper route with the skimmer I would also add in macro to help stabilize the tank. As a matter of fact, I would add the macro in even before you get the skimmer...

Yep...I would agree with getting a skimmer. You will be surprised at what it will pull out of your water.

thanks for the info - well am liking the reef tanks amazing stuff - this was originally for my 6yr old son and 3yr old daughter they wanted Nemo bit now I am addicted - I removed orimental rocks and put about 50lb LR to start so any referrals would be highly appreciated

ok i think I am looking for FOWLR kind of tank since that is what I have at the moment not sure what the next step would be - like I said I pay I guy to do this but I liking it too much - what is the diff between FOWLR and a reef in this beginner mind they are the same??

FOWLR is fish only with live rock, using the live rock to process most of your waste. With fish only, bio-load is high and water changes and skimmers are the way to go. But, your water doesn't have to be as clean when compared to a reef setup, where you want to minimize bioload with low fish stocking, copious amounts of live rock, a big ol skimmer and coral. Lighting demands/costs are are generally higher in reef setups.

great thanks for the info I will keep reading - def sounds like FOWLR is the way to go for now - I am in Middletown, NY any locals let me know

Everybody has their own oppinion but when I see all the nastiness that a skimmer generates it just seems like it has to be a good thing for nutrient export in a closed system. Having the constant supply of oxygen can't hurt either.
