Maybe it's just a tough week but I visited 2 reliable always have great stuff stores (SITC and WWC) and could not find any new gotta have SPS corals. Is something going on?? I usually always find something that I just have to have but for the first time WWC had nothing (SPS) that was super colorful..and SITC just didn't have anything new that was gotta have.

I hope this is not a trend

What? Sure we're going to the same stores??

I wanna see pics of that tank if you couldn't find any colorful SPS at either one of those stores ;)

Paul how come you did not buy the montipora setosa, thats an SPS bright and rare:confused:

I know some shops get their shipments in mid to end of week.. shopping on a Sunday perhaps (despite the fine corals our LFS have) you were a victim of "someone got there before me" syndrome .. A lot of choice pieces tend to go on fridays and saturdays im sure?

Victor, Wow, my mistake. I did not know items in the front tank were for sale. That one definitely is filled with colorful got to haves.

you would think, right? I've been to a few stores that told me that corals were not for sale

i agree with Juicy! I have been to many stores that have some nice corals and when i ask how much they say, not for sale!

Sometimes you feel like saying "hey! Is this a friggin museum, or a fish store?

I know World Wide Corals and Exotic Emporium will sell whatever is in the store. If I had a store.....I'd sell you the rug from the floor if you really wanted it! Especially in times when the economy isn't so hot.

The reason some corals are not for sale is the store wants to grow it out so more people can share that coral instead of one getting it. It helps, so that more corals do not have to be taken from the reefs.

riiiiiight! these stores are retailers! not farmers or wholesalers!

Here's my thing......if you are in the business of growing out corals, then you should have a farm like SITC....and those pieces should be in said farm. If I walk into your retail store, you should sell me what I want to buy. period! and if it isn't for sale, then it shouldn't be in your retail store.

Here's the deal! If I wake up on a Saturday morning with nothing to do.....and maybe the lady is over her mom's with the kid. I will jump in the truck and do some window shopping. If I come in your store and ask how much something is........BET that I have at least a few hundred dollars in my pocket that I'm not scared to spend on a new coral.....so long as it's a nice one....or two...or three....or five.

If you tell me that they are not for sale, or that you are "growing it out" so you can give it to more people, I will leave your store. I probably won't spend a dime. I most certainly won't go home and mark my calander of when to drive back and see if the coral has grown enough to cut up. If it's something real nice, I'll likely call a store or two to see if they have something similar, OR....even more likely.....google it, and have it shipped to my house the following tuesday.

Now, not only have you lost a sale that you aren't going to get back.....but I probably won't go back to your store again because I will figure that anything that I might like will probably be "on hold", or not for sale.

If you want to aquaculture and save the reef and that kind of thing, that's great! I commend you! But have a farm then! or at least have a tank that is separate for farming.

I don't buy the "this way more people can have it" or "so that we save the reef" crap at all! If you are a retail store, your job is to sell stuff to consumers! There are plenty of places that wholesale maricultured corals, and wholesale aquacultures corals. If you want everyone to have a piece and want to save the reef, order from a place that aquacultures and order more than one!

if you can't keep enough of the corals that people want in your tanks, then you need to look for different suppliers. If you only want to deal with the folks you are using now, then that is fine....but don't hide behind that some for everyone crap! If I can find the kind of stuff that is in my tank with little trouble....while only being a hobbyist, then you should have no trouble at all because it is your full time business! I don't see World Wide Corals having problems with keeping ultra grade corals in stock 100% of the time. I doubt that their suppliers and wholesalers only sell to them

Don't get me wrong! there are some GOOD stores in the area, but there are a couple places that just make you wonder how they even keep the doors open!

yea, the store i go to has all the "not for sale" stuff on racks. it's apparent which corals are not for sale. not a big deal imo.

now it's a different story if the corals are already sold.....I can see taking care of a regular customer.....but "not for sale" seems like a real silly business practice. Unless it was some irreplaceable one of a kind corals that you just absolutely could never get again, then you should sell it to me and order another. and if it IS that coral that you just can't let go, no matter what.....put it in your tank at home where you can enjoy it on your time off, and make room in your tanks for more corals that are for sale.

Corals Not For Sale

Corals Not For Sale

In response to the comment that corals are not for sale, please try to understand that in a retail business, when you have a display tank set up, this is to introduce people to what a reef tank may look like in there home. To allow customers to come and buy items from the tank really defeats the purpose of a display tank. I wish I could sell items out of my display tank but then when customers come in and look at it and it seems bare, what purpose does that reallly do for the store and for new customers or a new hobbyist? Most of the corals that are displayed in our display tank we have in stock or get stock each week. This is my only 2 cents worth in a direction from the other side --a business stand point.

Alot of us appreciate the fact that some stores do grow out corals so that they are affordable. Not everyone has $250. for a frag. It is obvious that many others share my feelings, as their doors are still open.

that's a valid point! But I would appreciate being able to at least buy corals of the same beauty from the tanks in the back.

I'm definitely going to come check you guys out soon! I've seen you shipment info and it looks like some good stuff on paper!

All I'm saying....is that if you have some ultra acros in the display that are not for sale, you should have some ultra acros in the back tanks that are! I don't wanna see the crazy zoas that you are hoarding if you only have greens and browns in the back......or none at all. Does that make sense? I know that you want your display tank to look nice....but so do we.....and we pay the bills!

I am guessing you meant Exotic Aquarium and not Exotic Emporium (the "toy" store on 17-92)! :p
