Where are folks purchasing salt?

I just tried ordering salt from Premium Aquatics where I get most reef supplies. They now ask $30 for shipping a 150 gallon bucket of IO. The last time I ordered it was $8 for UPS ground shipping. What is up with that. And so i was wondering where everybody is obtaining salt from. Are there any sites/facilities where we could organize a group buy?

I just Ordered from good old Fosters Smith. They are having an IO sale and shipping is $9.99. It would still be interesting to see if it is possible to do a bulk purchase. I know that Ithaca Reef (the clownfish breeder) gets salt by the truck load. Literally.

Dr F and S for me. Im on my last bucket so if a group buy is in order count me in for a bucket or 2

the 160 gallon bucket of IO at Petsmart for $35.99 is a hard deal to beat. It's the everyday price online. You can save on shipping charges by picking up the salt at the store yourself but there's one catch: you need to print out the $35.99 online price and take it to the store with you.

I need to do an experiment to see how much kalkwasser it takes to mix up a bucket of IO to the levels found in RC. (Probably less than a dollars worth of calcium hydroxide!)

I take a drs. Foster and Smith catalog with me down to petsmart and make them price match there price. It takes it from the 49.99 the usually want down to 31.99 the last time I got it. They don't even gripe about it, they just price match it and I am good. I get it for the online price and I do not pay anything for shipping. I have done that like 6 times so far.

The price match at Petsmart is pretty much the best way to go for IO. $31.99 is barely over cost. I can order it by the pallet full, and it ends up being like $30 and some change. I talked to a store owner who does a decent volume of slat sales, and he told me that selling his salt at $32 a bucket he only ends up making about $.30 per bucket. He orders 5 or 6 pallet loads at a time, so I think he gets a discount.

Not all Pet smarts will homer other companies prices. I tried Syracuse and Utica Pet smarts and they said they would not homer it. Only by printing out their Web site add would they even conceder it. I guess some locations are better than others. So for me to drive 35+ miles one way to get salt I just have it delivered to my door.

razz is right.
As a matter of fact, until I saw this thread I've never even heard of Petsmart matching the prices of competitors.

I think somebody working at Petsmart down there thinks they're at Home Depot!

The pet smart in Vestal is very good and has never given me problems as long as I print out the page of the salt I want with the price on it.

Dr. Foster and Smith is also very good especially when buying more that one bucket! It costs between $8 - $10 to ship the first bucket of salt then only about $2 for each additional bucket. When I order I get at least 3 buckets and it lasts me about 5 months. I don’t need any salt at the moment but if I did I would go in on an order with you Jerry :)
