As mentioned in this thread, go to Canton Road Nursery. They probably do not have right now. You need to talk to the owner/store manager, not the women at the conter. Ask the main guy when he is getting it in and if he can get it sooner. Last time I was there I bought 10 bags.

It's a bit of a hike from my location. Maybe I will try calling at a different time to see if I can get a hold of the owner.

Canton Rd. Nursery is fairly close to me. If you ever find out that they have it I'd be willing to pick it up and bring to a C-SEA meeting.

If we can get together and make a large enough order do you guys think they will get some for us in the off-season times like now?
I would go for about 10 bags if they are priced right.

I thought it was running around $5 for a bag. If anyone could ask there what it would take for a special order that would be great. I am over an hour from Canton so it would not be convenient to stop by there for me.

Thanks,
-- Kevin

I'd be in for 10 bags, if they had any or would do a special order.

I did call earlier and the woman who answered knew exactly what I was talking about but said that they didn't have any and didn't know if they would be getting any more.

It's interesting that yardright's website specifically states that this sand is not suitable for aquariums.

It's interesting that yardright's website specifically states that this sand is not suitable for aquariums.

I believe that is only to keep the pencil pushers from CaribSea (who sells the same thing under their own label) from getting on them.

Much the same as when you look at the tube of GE SIlicone I and it says " not for aquarium use" because the same thing is sold under the name All-Glass aquarium silicone. From what I have read they both use the same supply and just label the silicone differently. (and charge differently)

How much difference could there be in 100% Silicone sealant? It has no microban or anything added to make it different from the All-Glass stuff.

So it seems as though we have an order for at least 20 bags so far... anyone care to stop in and request an out-of-season order for the club? I am sure there are other members who would take the opportunity to stock up a bit.

You can count me in for 10 bags as well. I have a pretty solid truck for hauling it too if we needed to pick up an entire pallet.

By the way, I see someone was talking about using a skimmer during your sand storm after putting your new sand in.

It is not advised to do this as it will skim all the tiny particals that make a good sand bed.

Dr. Ron discussed this in his forum, but since he left RC you can view his threads on this.

I know Waterkeeper has stated the same thing.

You might try and do a search on RC to research this a bit more.

Your skimmer though will fill with a mud like material which is highly benificial in your sand bed.

Only my opinion.

I used the Sand from The Garden center, yardright or what ever it was called at the time, and i will tell you i would never use it again.

It is like a milky muddy mess, what a PIA,

I would rather spend the loot and get the courser Carib Sea Agra-Alive from the pet store. Maybe mix a few bags of the Agra-Alive and a few of the "dead"Carib-Sea sand.

That SOUTHDOWN stuff is OVERRATED IMHO

Or just go BareBottom and dont worry about it. :)

The sand in question is best for using with DSBs. Anything with bigger particals like mentioned is not good for DSB. Bigger particals will kill all the essential and benificial creatures in your DSB because the size is to big for most creatures to successfully survive.

Larger particals like CC in the bottom of a tank is a whole different process. There will be very few living creatures in the there and that is why you have to vacum a CC bottom. Because there is nothing living in the CC and therefore nothing to break down the waste.

DSBs are living with all kinds of creatures that break down detris and so. That is why you never vacum, disturb or clean a DSB. The finer sand the better for people wanting a living DSB. And the sand in question is best for this process. However, it is dead sand and you need to add something to it to sort of charge it and make it live sand. Simply adding live rock to it will certainly help. Also, adding a couple of cups from someone elses Live Sand is a good way.

About once per year there is a fellow on RC who starts a thread for people with DSBs. Several dozen people will send him sand from their own tanks. He then mixes it together and lets it cycle for a while so all the living creatures (too small to see of course) will work their way through all the sand. Then he bags it up and sends it back out to all the people who sent theirs in. This is a great way to sort of recharge your system. Again, Dr. Ron had great threads on this before he quite RC.

Also, you can order LS from several places online to add to your new sand bed. At least once per year you need to add something to it to again, recharge your DSB.

Again, this is only my opinion and the opinion of all who believe in the DSB system. I personally would never have anything else. I want my tank to look like the ocean.

Sorry for my ramblings!!

:D

Hey, I like your ramblings :)
I couldn't agree more with your opinion. I've had barebottom tanks, crushed coral tanks, and DSB. I'd never do anything but DSB. Mine are Southdown, up and running for 6 1/2 years, and everything is thriving.

DSB's support a wide variety of life. I probably spend more time looking at the life in my sand than I do the corals and fish.

Anyway, in regard to the mildew issue. I have bought both Southdown from HD and Yardright from Canton Rd. I had no problems with the Southdown. The Yardright did have some green color in it (be it moss, mildew or algae). In addition, I sold a couple of bags and heard there was clay in it too. I personally would not buy any more Yardright. I also prefer the white color of the Southdown over brown silica play sand for aesthetics.

If people are serious about a large order, I can go to HD and push the issue with them to get 30-50 bags. I only need 2-5 myself. Last time it took a great deal of effort and a very determined CSR to find some in Michigan. I do not have a truck to haul it though.

I can help out with the truck if you are willing to push the issue, Sagi.

With a small, one bag of sand donation from everyone of course.

I'm just joking :)

Joe,
If you can get your local HD to get it for us that would be awesome. I would still go for my 10 bags and dont mind coughing up a little for the guy who puts forth the effort to get this ordered and delivered.

Please let us know what they say about ordering 30- 40 bags.

Maybe we should all call her about every other day or so till they get some.

:D

If we had a total number of bags wanted. We could present to her or actually the decision maker (owner) a very nice presentation for why he should get some in now. It seems like most are just calling in but not really asking why they are not getting any in. Also seems like nobody is talking to the right person.

I am in sales and travel all across the state and I could stop in for everyone. Seem like we need to sell them the idea that it is also in their better interest to bring some in sooner.

What is their reasoning for waiting till March? Anyone ask this?

What can they gain from waiting?

What can they lose for acting now?

Sounds like if they bring in a whole pallet, that we could buy the entire pallet.

Another option is to have them order it and have it drop shipped at someones home or other establiment. Canton Road would just have to process paper work. No reason for them to decline this. Other than that it is a low margin item and not wanting to spend much time on it.

Intersting thoughts???
