How are Flame Angels in handling pods? I hear they can do pods, but also can terrorize corals depending in the individual fish.

they will eat pods, but more algae, and there is always the risk of them eating zoas or sps.

Damn them gangsta pods! Who do they think they are trying to take over my turf!

From what I saw they were very healthy. I saw them grow from 1 polyp to 6 in the couple months that they sat at the LFS. It was only a couple days that they were in my tank and this started. The RPEs were the only ones affected, but its hard to say if this would have continued on to the other zoos since I added the sixline shorlty after I saw the pods eating them.

ime the first few days in a new tank is when polyps are likely to decline, and thus possibly be viewed as a dying meal my pods.

Some amphipods are carniverous...but the ones we typically see in the reef aquarium are not. I wouldn't label them all as bad...it's just like saying all bristleworms will eat corals and healthy animals, all anemones will host clownfish, and all pistol shrimp will form relationships with pistol shrimp gobies...they don't...

I can see my Humbug Damsel and 6 line picking at the rocks, in a pretty aggressive way lately. Of course whenever I get close they think it's lunch time and step up the the counter, but from far away, they are really hitting the rocks hard to get something. FWIW, I haven't been feeding them as much, so maybe this is payback.

I did some tank cleaning this weekend and I was shocked at how large the 'pods' were. I had to clean off some plate algae and these things were hiding underneath, we're talking hundreds, and we're talking BIG like carpenter ants! OMG! I'm holding the rock and peeling off the algae and these things are jumping all over the place...and the squirming ones made me drop the rocks a few times in the bucket. Take note: the highest populations of these pods were around the affected colonies.

I also CAUGHT my 4 stripe damsel eating the skirts! I got real close and watched him eat a skirt right off a zoo! I am 100% positive, as when the zoo reopened some time later, it was missing that skirt.

Just a disturbing update.

Time for the DAMsel to go. Sounds like u have a compound problem w/pods and a damsel eating ur zoas. I dont have any fish in my tank so i know its the pods. Do u think that ur 6 line can eat those big amphipods? I'm looking for some heavy artillery like a 2 inch niger trigger or something that can tackle those big suckers.

Listen, just for clarification on what's being said here. If in fact your damsel and pods are eating your zoas, it's an isolated incident.

I've been in this hobby too long to agree that normal everyday pods eat healthy zoanthids.

But... you might have pods that are carnivors, which is not impossible.

But for those of you that are new to this hobby... The majority (99%) of pods in our reef tanks do not eat healthy corals.
;)

I feed 1-2 times a day...small amounts.

I too find it hard to believe that pods would consume the entire skirt off of several zoos, on different colonies.

My observation was that the colonies losing skirts were also near the large populations of pods.

I would suspect the Damsel as being the leading problem as I saw it first hand. He will be removed when time allows me to go fishin'.

I once saw pods take out an entire village. Get enough of them and it's amazing what they can do ;)

Once they turned me into a newt!
I got better.
:p

Just found this thread......
My zoas are dropping fast. I've searched for nudis and everything else, but to no avail. The only thing in my tank are 1000's of pods! And my zoas close up as soon as they come around.
I've lost an entire colony of Fire and Ice, and whatever it is, is working on my others. I truely think the pods are the culprit.

I only have a 12g Nano with 12 clowns, but I'm seriously thinking about adding a sixline for a little while to see if it makes a difference in the zoas. (My clowns will not like this at all).
