Where do big clams go?

This seems like a dumb question but what happens when your clam outgrows your tank (and everyone elses) those giant clams get huge! Do people just release them back into the ocean?

Don't know what I'll do with mine. Prolly donate it to the city zoo, if they'll take it.

He's a derasa, going on 12" long and about 6" wide closed up. Open he's about 8"-10" wide.

Don't know really. 20"-30" range I think. Gigas at 3'-6' in length in the wild I believe.

clam chowder :D

seriously, I have two large gigas clams, each of which is at least 12" long. found a buyer for one of them, not sure what I'll do with the other, probably just keep it and see how big it really will grow!
too bad maxima's don't grow that fast....

Also, I believe it's illegal to release any aquarium inhabitants into any waters around the US. Clams aren't found around the Continental US waters anyways. Only in South Pacific waters, etc.

There are people out there who enjoy collecting large clams. A LFS around her had a 16" Gigas for a few weeks before it was sold. Some people just don't have the time to buy a 6" Gigas and wait 4+ years to reach "huge" size.
