Where do we get bulkheads in Iowa City?

I've been to both Lowe's and My-nards but I can't seem to find them.

Hung (SOM) told me where he gets them a while ago but he's out of town for a few days. (Mike?)

If they're @ Lowe's or Menards, could you please let me know what section they're in? Not anywhere near plumbing and they (the kids) have no idea what I'm referring to.

I'm referring to the bulkheads/drains that everyone drills into their tanks/sump and in my case a garbage can.

Dark plastic with a male fitting threaded on both sides for a male 1" or a female 1 1/4".

Thanks!

Not sure where you can get them locally, farm supply stores sometimes carry them. Personally, I get mine online, Savko.com has some really nice Sch 80 bulkheads at a good price, they also have the lighter weight type you would get from Hung, they are close to so shipping is pretty fast from them.

Eric,

Hung was ordering his from Championlightting and supply I think. If your lucky you can try the Farm/Fleet here in iowa cityas thats where I got mine last. I may a bulkhead that has the threaded (female? on both ends. I believe its a 1.5" that I got from Hung. It looks just like:

with threads on both ends.

Let me know
Mike

Mike -

Let me know if you want to sell it!

Otherwise I'll try the local farm supply stores after work today.

I'm setting up a easy water change system, initially with one garbage can then eventually with two.

My thought is that having the garbage can above the sump level (21 inches for a 100g stock tank) I can mix the water then open a valve to drain into the sump.

I'm still undecided if I will run the drain over the top of the sump or if using the factory drain at the bottom (Rubbermaid stock tank) would yield the same result via gravity. I'll be using this bottom drain for a return from my 30g fuge and I hope this won't pose a problem for the fuge return. I'm also going to use a submersible return pump from the sump. The return from the tank will be split near the fuge and with a valve I'll be able to control flow through the fuge and accomplish all of this with one return pump and without wories of an overflow.

I'm going to use a second can with two drains - one at the bottom plumbed into my sewer and one at a 15 gallon level back to the sump. With a valve connected to the return pump I can pump/divert water into the second holding tank with the upper drain always giving me the same amount/level as I can go until I get flow back to the sump. Not interested/don't trust electronic floats.

After the fresh water is mixed, I'll divert and fill the second tank, open the valve and drain the new water into the sump, then open the valve on the holding tank and drain the change water into the sewer. Getting tired of the bucket scenario!

Speaking of pumps, I have noticed plastic sump pumps @ Menards that got me wondering if they would work versus a Quiet One/Mag/etc. Thoughts?

Be careful with sump pumps, most of them have metal parts in them, they are not made to work with saltwater.

I know and I've thought about buying one that claims to be all plastic to take it apart and see if that's true.

I also wonder if they're designed to run 24/7.

I have a "plastic" one, the impellor shaft is metal, it may be stainless, but not all stainless steel can hold up to saltwater. I dont know about running it 24/7, my guess is they are not made for that either, in a normal application, they rarely run at all.

You might want to try Orscheln's in IC, I was at the one in Wash. today and they had a couple isles of plumbing. Not sure if they have what you need, but might be worth a look anyway.

Thanks!

I've been to Orscheln's, Pauls, Lowes and Menards - Ended up making something out of PVC.

I'll take pics of what I'm doing.

Now...where's that shovel...?

Orscheln's in IC does carry bulkheads. You may not have seen them because they are not with the traditional plumbing supplies. They are mixed in with the feeding/watering troph plumbing supplies. Couple different sizes. check the isle three from the cash register, bottom shelf, lots of white plumbing supplies hanging above them. pricing was decent too. I have 3 in use right now, all work great
