Where does cyano go at night - water change timing?

More update for interested parties ...

2 days after 3 day blackout - cyano started to appear again. Got worse every day, but not as bad as before.

4 days after blackout - I added PURE REEF BALANCE (10 balls for 60 Gal tank) to help the good bacteria to win.

11 days after blackout - Cyano continued increasing, but not critical. I added MYCOSIDOL (9 tables for 60 Gal tank).

24 hours after MYCOSIDOL - 80% of cyano gone

48 hours after MYCOSIDOL - 100% of cyano gone

4 days after MYCOSIDOL - no sign of cyano YET, starting to see minor diatoms on the back wall

I got some mycosidol myself the other day but I have been reluctant to use it as I have seen others say it has had a negative effect on their filtration bacteria. Have you seen any of these effects?

I have to agree with you that blackout is a bandaid. But I felt that if I were going to do the rest of recommended steps (similar to your suggestions), it did not hurt to get it little under control and give the other bacteria a fair chance. Sort of start with a clean slate.

How's it going now?

I have not seen any visible effects, but for a small increase of nitrates from 0 to 0.5, which could have been due to the lower bacteria. But I also added the PURE REEF BALANCE bacteria to possible help this. The other minor change maybe due to these changes was a slight increase in leafy green algae.

Another quick update for those interested ...

It has been 5 weeks since the MYCOSIDOL and still no signs of cyano.

I am still fighting an outbreak of red hair algae - assuming that my nutrient level is still too high even though the tests are showing minimal/no values.

If you've got algae outbreaks and your tests are reading low it's consuming it. Do you have a fuge? May be an option gives you a place to grow it outside of the display tank

I don't have a fuge. I got the RedSea 250 MAX tank setup. It did not come with fuge and there is not much room for it. I am still trying/hoping to do without it.

One more update ...

It has been over 3 months and cyano is still nowhere to be found. But I continue having too much hair algae (green and red).

So I started carbon dosing (vinegar) and I will see if algae goes away and cyano stays away.
