HI

I'm just about to move to Ottawa and it is almost compulsory for me to have a pair of ocellaris and a giant carpet.

so where to find one in Ottawa.

I've checked the website of the major LFSs but seemingly they are not offering any.

Big Thanks

Did you talk to the best lfs and see if you can get one ordered or post a wanted in a local forum... I honestly drove over an hour to get a gig from a local reefed tearing down his tank since it had a better chance of suvival just brought a few towels wrapped a salt bucket filled with his water then snapped the top on do to it being it the bucket it was easy to acclimate

Same here people usually go for the haddoni.. I personally like the gig better with the exception of the red haddoni

Gigs are MUCH harder to import and keep. It may just be a question of what is available versus what people prefer. I agree with jestr - go to the LFS tell them what you are looking for and pull out your wallet :) Any decent LFS will find stuff for you if they know they have a good customer waiting.

If you don't mind driving about a couple hours south to Gananoque, get ahold of Jim at fortyfathoms.net and see if he can order you in a Gig from his suppliers.

A lot of the times he picks up his stuff from the airport in Ottawa so you could more than likely meet his somewhere there and get it directly off the plane. Just make sure you have a good quaranteen set up for the gig when you get it home to bring it back from being stressed.

The problem with a special order on a gigantea is that so many come in poorly, that you may be stuck with a guaranteed looser.

Then you are dealing with the wrong lfs and I would not buy any nem from them because they don't have a quality supplier or do not care enough..

You've special ordered giganteas and found it always works out?

A quality supplier is by far not the only thing required to get a healthy gigantea that will acclimate to your tank. Were not talking about RBTAs or other easier to collect and ship anemones.

Yes I understand that.. were I get my nems there supplier has a long holding qt process which is nice every one in our club that gets one of there hand chosen specimens has had great sucess I have not heard one fatility in the last year

Quality supplier probably means little when dealing with survivability of giganteas. They just don't live no matter what is done by the aquarist or the supplier to ensure survival. Finding a healthy one is probably the hardest challenge of keeping them alive.

Yes, must be. Even the biggest and best online places have sometimes simply stopped requesting them from even their best suppliers because the chance of survival was so low they were taking big losses.

I have stopped buying gigs online (even got lucky and got one off dd), sadly it was doa. I have tried three different online vendors none of which was successful. They all arrived gaping and spewing thier mesenterial filaments from stress. Now I buy them from local reefers. Lesson learned.

GL.

FWIW, I got one from DD that appears to have worked out, but I agree that it is hit or miss, and a vendor of any type that quarantines them for a few weeks for you and/or offers a guarantee for a reasonable period is a big plus. Few LFS do that, at least around my area.
