Where to buy a bucket of Tropic Marin????

Yeah, levels nuts (Ca way too high, Alk way too low), and nasty, tenacious algae covering all the rocks.

I'm taking a stab here, but I'm guessing that's what Poppy meant, and is what I and many others experienced using Oceanic salt. The incredible thing is that they haven't changed the formula still. If you mix it at 1.020, it comes out fine re: levels, but who wants that low a salinity in a reef? Mix at 1.026 and you are up *#&@'s creek.

I have noticed that I am starting to get brown goop on my sand and that my glass is starting to get it faster now (my nitrates are approximately 20) but I have been doing water changes weekly (about 8 gallons on a 55). This only happened though once I increased my SG on my tank from 1.020-21 to 1.025-26. So I find that to be very interesting.

Not sure if the Instant Ocean caused the same problems as Oceanic tp.

I would do larger water changes if you could. 8g on a 55 is not that much. I would do 1 large water change and then check your trates again and see where you are at. I would say a 50% change would help a lot more than 8g a week. That is not really helping anything in the big scope of this. By the time the next change is due, what ever (if any) nitrates were removed, are present again I am sure.

It is 15% yes. However, when fighting Nitrates larger water changes will help more then weekly small ones. I would bump it up personally. Of course it is preference though. I only do a water change once a month on my 120g and I do 40g. That is roughly 35% each month.

I do at least 10% weekly, nitrates or not. Actually, w/the DSB, they're always at 0. Try adding Purigen to your filtration. Removes a lot of nasties.

Yeah, I also do it regardless. I figured that doing weekly water changes will only help me out more in regards of not having to dose additional chemicals to replenish depleted trace elements and etc.

I also just upgraded from 260w of PC lighting to 800w of MH too!

I want to clarify that doing weekly water changes is not a bad thing. Probably a great thing. I am just fortunate enough right now (knock on wood) that I can get away with monthly changes. I also drip Kalk 24/7 so that helps me maintain my alk and calcium. By maintaining the Alk with the Kalk, my PH stays in line. Which means no need for any additional chemicals or supplements. I have minimum flow going through my sump so that my skimmer can do a lot of the filtering for me also.

So far so good for what I have.

I am using up my last bucket of Reef Crystals as I am switching to Tropic Marin as well due to the better element levels. When testing my fresh water-change water with RO water and Reef Crystals, I had low Magnesium @ 1020, high Alk @ 9.6 dKH and low Calcium @ 380. I also have well water, not city water.

I thought RC causes low Alk? Weird too, cause my Ca is always around 420. Go figure.

No drip system for my tank-- very simple, no sump either.

Jeni, I may have had the brand incorrect, but I thought it was reef Crystals. They could have possbily made a bad batch with the Alk problems. Hard to say. I just know tropic marin has not let me down in over a year now.

TP 800 w MH on a 55 G. How is that working out.

It's going good so far but that AC will definately be going full blast during the summer!

My roommate refers to my canopy as the "wind box" because of the 2 huge fans in it. But my tank stays around 82-84 the entire time.

I also have a 72g tank sitting in my loft but that won't get setup until August because I'll be moving again (who knows where!)
