Where to buy an Ocellaris-compatible Anemone

I was thinking Ritteri/Magnificient, but understand they are more difficult. So open to suggestions -- and more importantly -- where to buy. I understand Stichodactyla mertensii and Stichodactyla gigantea are other options.

By the way - this is for a 29 gal species tank with just the ocellaris and the anemone (and live rock) and lots of flow and dual 150W HQI lighting.

The system will be fed with continuous water changes from a large 200gal SPS tank via LiterMeter3.

Hi Tony,

Yes, wild ocellaris will accept BTAs as a host. They don't always do it immediately, but they usually do.
Ritteris and S. gigantea are two of the most difficult anemones to keep. Even if you have the proper conditions, it is difficult to find one healthy enough to survive more than a month.

S. mertensii are very rarely imported and the chance of you finding one that would fit in a 29 gal tank are very, very slim.

Your best bet would be a bubble tip. If you can find a healthy (not white) sebae (H. crispa) anemone, that might also be a good choice.

Here are some WC percs in a BTA

Thanks so much for the detailed and thoughtful response! I will certainly take your advice.

Any tips on where to buy a bubble tip online?

Is the one in the photo above a rose bubble tip?

The one in the photo had pink tips on green/brown tentacles. The pink doesn't extend for enough down the tentacle for it to be considered a rose. I was a nice anemone though. I sold it a while back.

Personally, I would not trust any online dealer to pick an anemone for me. Where do you live in California where you can't find a LFS that can get BTAs for you?

I live near San Francisco so there are a couple places. I didn't know if there might be an online retailer that you guys would trust --- seems like a potential niche for someone to carve out for themselves (anemones).

Thanks again for the tips!

Tony since you're in the Bay Area, may I suggest going to Milpitas and look for Aquatic Gallery, they have some pretty RBTA's. For a bit cheaper price try Aquatic Bliss in Fremont, they're only open during the weekend (look up at craigslist). There's one store here in San Jose that sells RBTA's it's Lucky Goldfish (the store is not that pleasing and stocks are somewhat good but sometimes you will find a good deal. I believe they have a small size BTA for $20 now.

Thanks so much. I've wanted to check those places out. The only place I've gone is Ocean Treasures in SF -- which has some amazing stuff.

Just recieved a blue gigantica from reef hot spot(online vendor). Came in looking very good and the price was good compared to other online vendors. TR ocellaris went right into it. Now well see if I can keep it alive. Wish me luck.

You should start your own thread and I bet you you will get a lot of help.

Hi Tony, I would do what Phender suggested to you. Start with a BTA. Not only is their availability a bit more common but they are much more forgiving when compared to S. Gigantea and H. Magnifica.

If you want to pay a pretty penny, you could buy your BTA online on Divers Den. They also have great policies too and excellent customer service. They are a RC sponsor.

However, since you're in the bay area you probably can avoid all that and just buy a nice BTA locally. Check out your local lfs' and see what they got. Good luck!
