Where to buy Balanophyllia?

I have serious doubts anytime anyone offers something they call Balanophyllia, especially on eBay. From the link, you can't even tell what the polyp looks like. From the coralite, it looks like a Dendrophyllia to me. I doubt whoever is selling it has a real understanding of how to properly ID a Balanophyllia.

Plus, this link is going to be removed if the mods see it. Technically, all eBay links are verboten.

I agree with ninja. True Balanophyllia usually have a more "oval" coralite in full grown specimens. In that picture in the link it is hard to tell, but looks more like a Dendrophyllia to me as well. Could be a juvenile polyp though...again hard to tell???

Here are a few pics of the Balanophyllia I keep...note the "oval" shape of the fully grown coralites:

I've seen a handful of different sizes from Aquaticauctions the past several months. Anywhere from one head to 6.

Okay, I'll try liveaquaria. Rowjimmy, where'd you get yours?

Nemo,

I got my single large head from my LFS. I got the smaller single head, and the larger colony from Aquatic Auctions. I got the other small colony from Jendub. Actually Jendub has a large single head for sale right now.

Yes they are more rare then Dendro's to aquire IME. Jendub is an online coral dealer (I have no affiliation with them). Just add a .com to the name and it will take you to their website. I don't know if I can add the link here that is why I didn't.

True Balanophyllia may grow comparably to Dendrophyllia, but it doesn't bud like Dendrophyllia. Unless you get it to spawn somehow, the polyp you buy is the only polyp you will have.

There is one caveat, however. I have a coral that was sold to me as Balanophyllia. Granted, I have my doubts. I think the only reason they IDed it as such is due to it's clear tentacles. Otherwise it looks a lot like a Dendrophyllia. In any case, about 4 months ago I made the mistake of placing it too close to my Pseudocorynactis. Being a hungry bastard, my Pseudocorynactis one night decided to try to steal food right from the "Balanophyllia's" mouth. It stung the hell out of the balano, leaving what I figured to be dead remains. In shear desperate hope, I moved the balano and left it in a corner of the tank. Then I forgot about it for the following three months. To my surprise, I found three new baby polyps on it about a month ago. Now, if this is indeed a Balanophyllia, this leads me to believe that they are fairly hardy, at least under the right circumstances. Perhaps they can be fragged with relative ease...

Do it! Frag them! :D

My DD's "balano" is budding. Also came with 7 tiny tiny polyps around the edge of the coral that have grown quite well.

That is awesome. Do you mind telling me how much you paid for it? :D

Ouch... 125 for a polyp is painful. How do these grow compared to dendros?

Yes...I know the pain quite well :(. I wouldn't buy it for that price, but it is the only one I've seen for sale in a while. Ironically I obtained my largest and most beautiful specimen at my LFS for $40 bucks.

Like ninja said they grow somewhat similar to Dendro's without the budding IME. The only growth I've really seen on my Balano's is the "stalk" tissue expanding. I feed them heavily too, and I've never seen any new polyps form.

GoingPostal,

I was always intrigued by your Balano. I posed the question about Balanophyllia budding in the "Balanophyllia Pictures" thread, but never got an answer. Your specimen definately looks like a Balanophyllia to me. I wish I could get mine to "bud" like that.
