where to buy clowns?

Hi,

I would like to buy two young, healthy Ocellaris clowns. Does anyone have any advice on where to get them? I'm not always thrilled with the price and condition of Ocellaris clowns at the LFS. And, it seems like they often don't have them even thought they're so popular.

I thought about online. Any comments?

I've also looked for a hobbyist breeder, but haven't found one, even in Chicago.

If you were going to buy two Ocellaris clowns, where would you go?

In my opinion, you should quarentine anything you buy from a store around here. Aquatics Unlimited on HWY 100 has some, I was just there tonight. They are captive bred, not in optimum condition...but they rarely are in a LFS :)

HTH!

i would go to liveaquaria.com personally.

the 14 day guarantee is worth it. It seems all local stores have no guarantee.

Sero,

Did you see how much they were going for at Aquatics Unlimited? Did they look at least decent? I just don't understand why the Ocellaris Clown (the world's most famous and popular fish-supposedly) is so hard to find. It seems like I see more Purple Tangs and Clown Triggers that look healthy and happy than I do Ocellaris Clowns. Somebody around here needs to breed them and flood the market.

I'm thinking about going totally nuts and getting a couple Ocellaris clowns at Petco! I try to stay away from that store, but right now their fish look healthy and they're about half the price of other stores. So what can I do? I'm on a student budget....

They didn't appear to have any diseases that I could tell. I would suggest putting any new fish in a QT tank if that is at all possible tho. I put some true perculas in my Display Tank w/o the QT for 4 weeks and I wound up with a brooklynella outbreak. I'll never go through that again. Tis' the only reason I mention it :)

I can't say I disagree with horkn either, fosters & smiths' s service and warranty beat any LFS around here hands down. If you must buy them localy, I know they are at Aquatics Unlimited.

Aqua exhibits downtown Mil. on 4th St. has tons of clowns. Always
quarantine clowns! I have lots of books on clowns, wont get into
detail but quarantine 1 to to weeks. I recomend 2 weeks

well, seeing that basically nobody can keep nudibranchs, then that really doesnt bother me.

i have been to aqua exhibits many times, and i can say that their fish are usually quite healthy, and decently priced. coral selection there is poor at best, and not as cheap as they used to be (coral wise only)

Sure, but the fact that a nudibranch (which releases toxins when it dies) is just floating around in a tank, makes you think. And when I was there (months ago), many of the fish were in really rough shape. Maybe hings have changed. I heard they were under new ownership...

i dunno. i really cant recommend any reef store or reefer to buy nudibranchs at all, maybe berghia's and thats it. but yeah, i see your point. fwiw, sea hares supposedly release toxins into the tank when they die, but i have tried 2 for algae control, and others have too, with no ill effects when the sea hares go south, which IMHO they always will, its just a matter of time.

LOL - didn't count the live fish.

I agree - any fish can have dead stores, but they shouldn't be left in the tank to rot and advertise this fact.

I've had 1 fish survive from AE out of about 10 I've bought
yes, they are the cheapest, but never the healthiest

I usually only buy fish that are "mis-marked" at a super discount

as for finding clowns now,
both Hoffers and AU are in pond mode now,
the fish budgets are tied up with Koi and pond filters
wait about 1-2 more months, then you'll see more selection for aquarium fish
