Where to buy Fish?

I have also had very good luck with picking up fish at the retail outlet in Rhinelander. I bought my last six fish there. I got the four anthias and a pair of chalk bass. All have been healthy happy and eating since day one.

Thanks Lisa I guess I am going for a ride I will probably make a day of it my son can race in Rhinelander in the morning and I will buy fish in the afternoon.

BMX bikes. This is his second year so I need to expose him to other tracks and next year I will make sure he gets to the necessary races for state ranking. Then National ranking is next.

BryanJ,

That sounds like fun...my son does motorcross. I just bought an Achilles Tang at Just Pets. I will let you know how it does.

Curious how big?
Do you plan on QT or UV sterilizer?

Well, the fish is about 4 inches. I am a very, very, bad girl...the fish had minimal ich spots and I only aclimatised and introduced. It was interesting really. Usually I get a fish and it hides for a few days and then comes out so I know it is alive. This sucker didn't even breath hard and started grazing and scaring my other fish right off the bat. So far so good....

My son would be jealous if he heard that. He already walks around going my dad won't let me do motocross. What he does not realize is most of the people he says this to won't let their kids even race BMX  So I let him talk it up, he's not hurting anyone.

I suppose that I shouldn't have been so flippant in my last response. The reasoning behind the way I did not quarantine this particular fish is based on my personal opinion that ich is present in all tanks all the time, and attacks the weak or imune compromised fish. This kind tang is extremely sensitive and has a low survival rate so being that it was already skinny and obviously stressed I decided to introduce the fish directly into the large tank. The fish only had two tiny spots of possible ich and I knew my cleaner shrimp would pick him clean soon (which they did). The bigger issue is that the fish is skinny, skinny, skinny...Did I say he was skinny? I couldn't see how bad he was until the MH's came on this afternoon. I don't know if this guy is going to make it. He is still active and has no apparent parasite or disease, but he just doesn't look good. I probably should have waited and bought my tang at Foster's and Smith because of their two week guarantee, but I just wanted one so bad I thought I would give this one a chance. I probably blew $90.

Lisa

Naw, you fell off awhile ago. You've just been walking so long your delerious.

Let see... fish...Drugs....fish...Drugs....fish...Drugs....fish...Drugs....I think the fish are still a better way to blow 90$. You'll go further.

Jason,

What the heck did I fall off and why the drug reference? I don't get it... I will say that I knew I made a big mistake about 10 minutes after my impulse buy. The Achilles is dead! I took his crunchy body out this afternoon. Next time it is either Coral Boy Farms or Fosters & Smith. I feel bad about what happened to such a precious fish, but I think he was doomed from the get go. I have never lost a fish in my 210 and I maintain it meticulously. I will just be more carefull about where I buy them. I only had like 10 min when I bought that fish so I overlooked his obvious health problems because he was my dream fish. Mistake! Everyone else is fine, they are just ****ed because I drank beer and didn't feed them tonight.

Lisa:( :D :D

It happens. A lot of the time the fish are starved from the import process and many don't even eat at the wholesalers, so the fish found in most stores, especially picky eaters like some tangs can be, tend to be on the skinny side. It can be hard to nurse a fish like that back to health.

Ordering from someone with a guarantee, ot ordering direct from the wholesaler (even if it's through a store) so the fish goes directly into your tank is almost always a better bet than buying a fish from a store tank.

You may want to check with Spike (Aquabucket) even and see if he can maybe order you one direct, or CBF as you suggested. Either way, it's less stressful on you and the fish to take it directly home in the bag if you're confident your tank params are in-line with what they should be.

Remember, you can always ask to see a fish eat prior to purchase. CBF should be able to get you a nice one. Sorry to hear of your loss.

Well, that's not always true - even though you would think it would be.

I asked to see an angel eat at one of the two saltwater stores in Appleton, and was told NO by the manager. :eek2:

I was told that they were fed ONCE in the early morning and that was it.

I said before I spend $60 on a fish, I would like to see it eat - I was still told no.

Right now our stock on SW fish is very low. We had big advertised sale and I have not replaced them with a large order yet because I made some filtration changes after the sale.

We usually don't have a huge selection as I do not overstock. All fish are date marked and feeding before sold. Its also our policy to feed the fish in front of customers. Most of our SW fish are fed twice a day.

I also order mostly net caught and MAC certified fish and avoid geographical areas where cynanide collection is rampent.

Wow, last time I'd go there. If they're not willing to do that I'd be more inclined to believe they won't do a lot of other stuff as well. Not to mention that most fish (especially marine) should be fed multiple times per day (which is what has happened at EVERY pet store I've ever had a say in) and I'd wonder about the health of every fish enough to not buy anything there. What's ten seconds of your time and a penny worth of food when you have a customer wanting to make a $60 purchase?

I won't ask you to publicly say which store it is, but if you wouldn't mind shooting me a PM, I'd like to know as I definitely won't be giving them much of my business with practices like that.

I wouldn't buy from there either if they wouldn't feed it in front of you. What does it take to put a tiny pinch of food in the tank if you're going to spend that mush $$ on a fish? If it dies you're just out the money, that's why I haven't bought any fish from LFS since we first started, all since then have been ordered online (at Live Aquaria, where they do have the 14 day guarantee). If they wouldn't show me I would get suspicious that it's because the fish wouldn't eat. Not necessarily the case, but I would want to feel comfortable about it before spending so much!

Hey Lisa,

I was at Coral Boy Farms trying to get him to sell you one of his Achilles tangs but he is keeping his. He did say he would get you one and feed it up and let you know when it was ready to go. Just give him a call.

He has been doing some serious farming. He's got about 600 frags made and said he was planning a big sale. I went there looking for a clam(got a big gigas)

Here is a few pics I took while I was there. I made the plugs for him. This tray is new. The coralline hasn't found the egg crate yet.
