Some folks like Cameta Camera
Stay far away from eBay and any deal that is too good to be true.
I would not hesitate to take their prices and walk into a loal Ritz or other camera store and negotiate a price.

B&H is great. I've had nothing but good experiences with them from cameras to lenses and filters. But don't be shy to take their prices to Ritz as Bean says. I got my 24-70mm for $960 doing that. (about 400 off).

The T2i should have some great deals going on it now with the T3i and T4i out. Keep your eyes open. I just sold my mint condition one for ~$425 IIRC. It is a very capable camera. If you can swing a nice lens... don't worry about buying the kit lens. It's too slow to really do much of anything. If you're new to DSLR, it'll be a nice upgrade from a point and shoot, but it doesn't really hold a candle to other canon lenses (even non-L lenses). I used a 100mm f/2.8L macro for a lot of my aquarium shots and it was a delight, but it's also expensive.
Also check out Adorama and of course Amazon. Most of the time, the prices are about the same between all of the places that were mentioned, but occasionally one or the other will have a particularly good deal. Adorama and B&H will also often have their own "kits". In other words, they may bundle the camera with something other than the typically low quality "kit lens".

I have a D3100, and I would buy it again. Easy to use... fast shutter speed, HD video.
If you buy from Cameta, see what is available in additional lenses. I nabbed a zoom and wide angle for only a few hundred. They have great packages on their ebay store.

Thanks ill look in to getting a macro lens is there somewhere I can read up on the best settings for pictures in a reef tank
