Where to drill a tank

Hello All,

I've read a good number of articles detailing how to drill a tank but none address where to drill it. simply put, how do i determine how far below the black plastic trim to drill?

Thanks Dave

You need one hole diameter worth of glass left after you've drilled the hole. That means holes should be 1.5X the drill size down and 2X the drill size apart as measured to the center of the hole(s).

I drilled my tank today. It was a bit nerve wracking but really was easy. I made two holes for the the overflow and two more for the return lines. The returns lines are 3" from the outside edge and 2 1/4" from the top of the glass (1 3/8" hole). The overflow holes are 2 1/4" from the top and about 6" apart (1 3/4" holes). I've read that 3" was the magic number from an edge but placing the return lines that far down from the water level would have created other issues. Standard 75g.

Those are minimum clearances from the edge of the tank, but you also need to consider your overflow and drain system. Actual spacing will likely be different.

This thread had the configuration I settled on for a bean animal overflow for my 120. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2482812&highlight=overflow

Where the "teeth" are in the overflow determine the tank water level. So place that part on the tank wall accordingly. Typically the tank water level will be 1/2 way up the teeth.

Unless you skip the teeth in which case the overflow works better because double the surface skimming :deadhorse1:.
