where to drill?

I am still planning my 120 upgrade and would like some help. Where should the drains/closed loop returns be drilled? How many holes / what size? I can drill what ever I just am not sure what I need to get the best results.

I have not decided on the pumps yet. Are you talking about just one 1" drain with several 3/4" returns? Is that enough flow for a closed loop with a sump?

the drain should be the same diameter as the input to the pump. the returns can be whatever combination of sizes you like - most commonly 3/4 or 1" for a 120. If it is a true closed loop, the drain can be wherever you like. I prepfer my returns just below the surface to increase 02 exchange. JMO

Yes you will need an overflow drain, and in intake for your closed loop. Myself, I suggest keeping the holes as close to the top of the tank as possible, I hate failures that drain the tank.

also, remember not to drill any hole closer than 1 diameter distance to the edge of the pane of glass you are drilling.

tank is an oceanic 50 (~42 gallons) & here is how i've laid mine out

overflowreturnclosed-loopdiagram.jpg

* the black is the 700gph overflow kit from glass-holes.com that is the overflow box w/ 1 1/2" bulkhead. that will flow into my skimmer section of the sump

* green at the top are the dual 3/4" returns from the sump being pumped by an ocean runner 3500 (~900pgh). i'm thinking about putting hydor flow deflectors on both of them to randomize the flow at the top & also keep the surface aggitated

* red are the 4 3/4" bulkheads for return side of the closed loop. those will have short loc-line w/ flat nozzles pointed in random directions

* blue are dual 1 1/2" bulkheads for feed to closed-loop pump which will be a mag 9.5 mounted externally. these will have the bulkhead strainers that look like this:

i have bought an oceans motions 4-way, but i might not use it & i might just do a regular 4-way t-fitting on the return side of the pump....not sure yet

mike at glass-holes.com set me up a killer deal on all the bulkheads & stuff.....they f'n ROCK!!!
