Where to get Live Rock?

I'm planning a setup.... Looking at on line providers of rock....have any of you gone that route, if so where? Local, where?

when you get your rock soak it in heated, circulated saltwater for a week and check phosphate - if the levels are high, treat it before you put it in the tank!

Thanks... I am planning to go to Buffalo to check out the shops. Which are the two best? Also, I hear one of them has a 2000 gallon set up.

Every time I stop by the Rochester LFSs they have nice liverock at a decent price. Tip: bigger pieces are usually better to work with. Get the best LR you can find.

My favorite in buffalo is a reef creation without a doubt. I also really like saltwater paradise in tonawanda which is probably about 20 minutes away from ARC, but buffalo coral reef is literally like a minute away from ARC. I in there is quite awhile so I really can't speak of it.

Stupid phone cut off message....anyway IMO top 4 in buffalo and surrounding area:
1. Arc (buffalo)
2. Saltwater Paradise (tonawanda)
3. Buffalo Coral Reef (buffalo)
4. The Fish Place (tonawanda)

I'd buy somebody's tear down. Maybe hand pick a few pieces. Dry rock would be my first choice. Spending retail on live rock was never a good investment for me. These days, i' m happy to cook rock and deal with nasties before it hits the display.

Don't go to a Reef Creation, their wayy too overpriced. Go to Buffalo Coral Reef On Genensee right by the Airport right before a Reef. Mike is an awesome guy and will hook you up.

Looking to do this exact tank. I had a 65 gallon Tank I took it down about a year and a half ago. I'm looking to get back into it this fall. The thing that really sucks is I have to start all over again with everything, RO/DI, Salt, Hydrometer, Salt, Test Kits, everything. The question is would you run a Skimmer and Reactors on a 24 gallons? I plan to do water changes every week. What would you suggest?

Finally another 315'er. Ontario here. Simple go to ABC In Fairport. Shop local best to keep as much money on your side of town.

I'm a big fan of dry rock seeded with live rock. My tank is aquascaped with pukani dry rock from BRS (bleach/acid washed) seeded with about 10% live rock from ABC reefs in Syracuse (my LFS). Going that route saved me a ton of money in the end, and the rock looks amazing (minus the annoying lime-green it turns before the coraline grows). If I had to do it all again, I'd probly go with the "reef saver" rock just because it is cleaner and is mined from an ancient reef rather than taken from the ocean, but the pukani is certainly awesome nonetheless.

That's great, you guys are very helpful and friendly, Lord knows I will need it! I just bought a 120 gallon setup from a local guy. I'm going to have my work cut out to figure everything out!

Hi! We are lucky indeed, 3 specialty reef stores within 20 minutes! I just delivered my setup to my home yesterday and will be setting it up in the next few weeks. For now, I'll sort it out, clean, and read.

Most of the shops have fair pricing for being a retail outlet. A few not mentioned but stiil not too much further than abc in fairport : Caribbean Forest 24 bursen court, rochester, The reef shoppe 1969 E ridge Road, Rochester, Salty Dog 145 S Main st , canandaigua 14424, Marine Oasis 5340 west ridge road, spencerport, the ones in buff have already been listed and all the stores have their ups and downs some are more expensive than others on livestock and vice versa on equipment. I will say that the ones who have more expensive livestock have a very fine selection of what one would consider "primo" corals. I have visited all of these places and enjoy all that each has to offer. Welcome to the URS on Reef Central and good luck with your tank.
