Where to get rare color coralline algae?

A pet shop by me had some orange and yellow coralline algae in their display. It was in there for atleast a year. Their tank was very dirty and poorly lit. I think these two poor conditions kept it alive. Arround a year ago they moved their display, upgraded their lights and increased flow. I'm not sure what caused it but within a month both the yellow and orange coralline where gone. It was very pretty though. I kinda think it was the low light conditions that let it survive.

Corralline takes over pretty fast. I hate it, personally, I would rather have healthy corals then corraline outbreaks anyday

i love my corraline! Anything is better than dirty looking brown algae covered rocks. I have noticed that the darker purples and dark reds usually grow on the bottom of the rocks, and the lighter purples and pinks grow on the side exposed to the lights. I guess something to do with ammount of light the part of the rock recieves.

Has anyone been able to sustain the greens and yellows for long periods? Why do the purples/pinks take over?

Mine depends solely on my lighting. When I run my overdriven t5's it turns green. When my ballast died and I had to run a cheap t5 fixture while waiting to get my 660 repaired it all went back to a deep maroon color. Now that the 660 is back it's mostly green again.

Bump - Any updates on the best places to get rare encrusting algaes?

I went to my LFS today and they had a tank with several rocks and the back wall with TONS of a bright yellow coralline/encrusting algae and it looked pretty damn cool.

I'm doing a tank build right now and get my MH T5 combo light and RW-15 this week....my last two pieces before adding live rock. I've got a 135g display with with ~140lbs Marco I plan to seed with about 40 lbs LR. My plan is to go there and try to buy as many of the yellow rocks as possible as soon as I get my light going.

Is there any place online to purchase the plating algaes or the other non-standard pink and purple colors? The last post here was a while back so I'm hoping the success of seeding rare colors has gotten better...

How about some like this
Picture132-2.jpg

I bought a rock covered in mushrooms. This coralline started growing under it and eventually got so overgrown it kicked all the mushrooms off the rock. It started off as just a purple rock with ten shrooms on it and somehow turned into a stack of purple potato chips.

Bringing up an old post but I'm wondering if anyone knows where you can purchase coraline algae plates to seed tank? Thanks

I went to a local coral propogation store, he has killer frag tanks. He even has a few powerheads where colonies of sps have somehow grown on them. His coralline coverage is phenomenal. If you ask for scrapings, you can easily seed your setup. He handed me about seven 3x3 plates from the walls and floor of a few different systems. Break gently into confetti and sprinkle it over your rocks with the flow set low. You should have no problem as long as your KH and Calcium is stable and elevated proportionately. Watch your Mag too. Good luck, takes patience.

As several people have mentioned, technically it is a macro algae.

Just bought some of each of the thin strand and the branching and spread it around the tank. Will see how it does. Growth rate is supposed to be slow.
Pacific East Aquaculture had good customer service and good packing/shipping. Will definitely order from them again.

The thin strand is a bright light purple, beautiful color. unique form, very cool. Nicer than the picture.

The branching is also a light purple but a little less colorful.
It might be considered reminiscent of having dead birds nest coral and having it encrusted with regular coralline? Neat stuff, but that was my second thought looking at it.

Neither one fluoresces under actinic's but the thin strand purple is so light it still shows up well.

We also have a tiny bit of reddish pink encrusting something that absolutely glows under actinic's. Would love to figure out what it is and buy more of it. We have about 2 square inches of it throughout the 75 gallon tank.

Still interested in the plating variety and encrusting coralline in multiple colors. Haven't sourced that yet.

Happy Reefing

I have turquoise blue, lime green, blood red, pink and purple coraline algae. Pink and purple grows much faster, the rest don't really spread that much. I ave tuxedo urchin that loves coraline algae.

I skimmed this thread... my apologies if other folks already covered some of this.

Some of the more exotic colored coralline will only really grow in the shadows on the rock and is incredibly low depth that needs high spectrum lighting even though it is not direct - my yellow and orange die for anybody not using MH. I might speculate that it needs IR, but I would have no idea. I have no doubt that there are many different kinds from all over the world, but if you see this algae for sale, pay attention to the lighting that it is under - it is rare in captivity for a reason.

There is also brown, dark green and black coralline which is quite a pain. You get these with the good.

I'm not sure, but I started getting a pink coralline on one of my powerheads that glows under actinic lighting... And I REALLY hope it spreads. It's pretty cool.

Yup! Isn't that stuff awesome? We have about maybe 10 dots. None of them are bigger than a quarter inch diameter. They seem to show up at the outermost part of the rocks. Guessing it likes higher flow area?

It could be some type of random encrusting sponge.

Still unable to Source any type of plating Coral similar to a montipora

You are correct. My turquoise blue/lime green grows under the shades. Blood red/pink/purple loves high light. Most of our purple coraline algae is plating, pink and red usually encrusting type.

Would love to know how you acquired your plating purple coralline algae.

Thanks!
