Where to go for the best snorkeling?

Around late December/early January I am going on a trip to do some snorkeling. I am trying to decide between going to Indonesia, and southern India. Which place has better snorkeling? Why?

PS: I'm not SCUBA certified.

Well, having never been to either I can't speak to the snorkelling but I can tell you from my research that Indonesia has some of the best, most untouched reefs in the world.

Here is my suggestion, if you are going to go through all that trouble to go to a place like either then I would strongly suggest getting certified with a PADI, NAUI, or SSI dive School. You are going to want to buy your own personal gear for the trip anyway so you might as well learn how to dive and rent a BC/Reg setup. and go see the beauty from the corals and fishes perspective.

Either way you will enjoy both places, and you are going to need to buy some gear so let us know how we can help get you on the right track.

i will agree with whitten if you are going to make the trip why not get certified and be able to scuba some of the best places the seas have to offer

We went to Bonaire a couple years ago. It's not touristy and everything underwater is part of a marine park. Everyone who goes there is careful and is a lover of reef life so it's pretty pristine. The only problem is that it's mostly a scuba diver hangout. We snorkel and were able to see so much just with snorkeling. It really was rather idyllic and there were dozens of places to go. We snorkeled in a mangrove swamp and around this little island. It was really so amazing! It's in the southern part of the Carribbean. Check it out.
