Where to go...Where to go...?

I'm going to be starting my annual drive westward to CA soon but THIS year, due to the blessings of the scheduling gods, I'll actually have a couple weeks to meander about the country and hopefully even shoot some scenics. The problem is that these couple weeks are the last two weeks in July; too late for any Spring interest, too early for Fall. Anyone have any thoughts for this time of year; preferably in the mid-to-western US, of a prime time photo location? My only requirement is that there be some kind of hotel in the general vicinity as I cannot take a lot of camping gear on this trip. Thanks.

Hey Ivy, it depends on which way you go through Pa., but north, the Great Lakes area through Erie and Cleveland area isn't bad. Going a bit south, Deep Creek Md. and through the mountains of West Virginia to the New River Gorge.

If you pass through Pittsburgh, shoot a pm and we'll do lunch. You can also see the Stanley Cup here!!!!!!

Thanks for the link; I'll be checking it out tonight. Originally, I'd planned to take a northern route in hopes that the temps would be a bit milder but since the weather has been all over the place so far, I don't have anything written in stone yet. If I DO choose to stay north, is there anyplace in Michigan's UP that's worth stopping for this time of year?

Tahquamenon Falls is great, there are many Historical Home Districts as well.
Plenty of nature shots here too.
Try www.Michigan.org
Good luck, I am planning my West Coast drive as well.

It'll be hot, but don't even waste any time in the East central areas (IMO...lived in NY though so done lots on the East. Drove X-country 3 times though. Look at some images at www.greene-art.com) Head over to the 4 corners area (Utah, AZ, CO, NV). Tons of great red- rock areas, lakes, dams, Grand canyon.

Or if you prefer the cooler MTNs, go Northernly and hit glacier NP, and farther North to the Canadian Rockies....amazing. Of course Idaho is amazing to drive thru and then you can meander around WA state. Olympic NP, Mt Rainer, head south, Mt Baker (or is it Adams?), Mt St Helens...keep going south and you get Crater Lake in OR, Canon Beach in OR (and or Ecola state park). More south in to CA and you have the Redwoods, Pacific Coast, Mt Shasta, & Lassen Volcanic NP. More of a mid states route and you got Yellowstone and the Tetons too.

Been a while since I looked at a map or took a trip out of AK but you'll need to decide what route your gonna take and then narrow it down from there. There are TONS of amazing places to go!

Camping gear takes space? All you really need is a small sleeping bag and maybe a bivy sack. Breakfast on granola bars or protien bars and eat a "real meal" after some good early morning hiking and photography back "in town"!
