Hi, i am getting 3 different florida ric's on sat. ( 1 blue 1 orange 1 mixed ) . I have a 24g aquapod with stock compact lights total 64 watts (32 actinic-32 daylight) ,there are mostly shrooms and softees in the tank ,the tank is only 16" deep . Should i start them near bottom first and see how they react ,or should i start them higher up to start with. no experience with ricordia husbandry except what i read ,wich is confusing with all different opinions. Thank you Stuart P.S. any husbandry tips would be appreciated.

thanks for all your help

thanks for all your help

it seems that people on this forum are more interested in showing and bragging about there ric's ,than trying to help someone who needs some information THANKS (NOT)

What bigScott said is right - just start on the bottom and see how they are for a few weeks and if you notice them looking different try moving them around.

Mushes\zoos don't really need to be fed anything but if you feed your fish and a shroom catches a bit of food it'll probably eat it. If you want to try to get them to grow cyclopeez i hear works good.

here we go again.

You are only running 64w of PC on a 24gl tank, so IMHO, the higher the better. Fl rics love light, so the higher the better. PC light is not that intense.

Most Fl rics will accept food, not needed, but they grow faster and are more plump if fed. I use small pieces of raw/cooked shrimp from the grocery store. good luck

i started my 75 gallon with PCs an they were just fine..
an in a shallow tank like that one i think thats plenty.. they just woant grow as fast because the light is not a bright as like a T5s or MH..oh ssimon thier are some verry helpfull people on here..
i consider many of them my friends alltho weve never met..id be posting pics also if i had a camer to take awsum macro shots..thier nothing id like doin better than bragging on my rics an yumas..thats my 2 cents worth..

thanks again big scott, please don't think bad of me,just was disapointed in the response to my questions. I was kind of excited because i bought some ric's on a group sale in phoenix area, and picking them up today. you were very helpful Stuart

Isnt the idea to get them to grow and prosper--So if brighter light is better, then higher up in the tank is better. The question was where to place them not what lighting is best. PC lights do not have the par of MH or T5 as you stated, so the higher up the better.

i started my 75 gallon with PCs an they were just fine..

What are you running now and why did you switch? Better light/par and better for the corals?

FWIW I run 400w MH on a 11 inch deep tank and the FL rics do very well. Years ago when I had a 55 uniquarium I had PC and the rics lived but were not colorful and did not grow.

You can keep a shroom alive under NOF but it is not the best for it's health.

Up high is where I would put it, but it is your coral. Good luck and I hope I was helpful!

Coming onto Reefcentral looking for help and then making comments like this is not a good thing to do. This is a very helpful community.

The proper question to ask before having this arguement is what lighting are the rics coming from, before the aquapod? If they were at the bottom of a 110 tall lit by pcs, better start them at the bottom. If they were in a tank like geoxman described, 11 inches deep getting slammed by a 400 w mh, probably plan on the colors fading wherever you put them, but you would be safe having them at the top of the tank. Either way, it would be best to go at the base of your rocks, in fairly low flow, and move them higher in a week or two, if you think they have more color potential.

I would agree with you in theory, but Fl rics love high light almost as much as SPS. Even if they came from a deep tank with low light, they will adapt very, very, very quickly and will do fine/better under PC very high up-more so than down low. I am only speaking from experience from keeping both lighting sources.

ssimon5-Best of luck with your new coral and experiment as we all have. good luck and happy reefing

Can't sum it up any better than that right there.

I had a MH and went back to 50/50 PC when I realized my rics were not growing and I was loosing some of my yumas. I was afraid at first the FL rics wouldn't take to the lower lighting but they are doing just as well and the yumas are all getting huge. My mushrooms are spreading once agian also.
I love the look of 14000k MH, but I have to do what is best for the corals. Now, even my green yumas, of which I had lost a few from a colony under the MH, are beginning to turn purple and green.

Here is some reading from ricordea.org

I agree somewhat with what he says about Yumas also. I also have my Yumas about 6 inches under the water, but I did it over a 4 week time frame.
Anyway neat site and lots of good info on shrooms as well as other corals! Good luck with your new coral

Ssimon15,
You may be frustrated with the responses on RC to your post.
BUT
Look at it from our standpoint also. Many of us post the SAME answers to the same basic questions very often on these forums. Answers that could have EASILY been found by the person asking the question if they had only looked for a few minutes in the forums (corallimorpharians in your case). Where to place rics in a tank and their lghting requirements has been asked (I'm guessing) several hundred times in this forum category alone. Try the search function or just read through thepast threads for a few minutes. That way you won't be disappointed with the response (or lack thereof) to your very basic questions.
Another hint would be to research and learn about the lighting requirements of your corals BEFORE you purchase them.

the biggest flaw of this website is the lack of a search feature. If it was enabled, threads like these would probably be minimalized.

Ok guys, lets stop with the non forum related issues. If you have a problem post them in the Feedback and Questions forums.
