Okay I need to replace a canister filter of mine.

Which one would you recommened for a 60 gallon heavily stocked ( I do have an aquafuge, and a remora pro as well...)

I was using a rena xp3 filstar... but now there is air coming from somewhere and causing tons of micro bubbles......

So I am looking at a fluval 404 or another xp3 filstar.

Any recommemdations?

Thanks

just another particle remover... and water polisher....

With my fish heavy tank, i like having the comfort of another device to remove particulate, etc....

I use the Ehiem "classic" 2213. It is awesome!

1) Silent, you can't tell it's on unless you feel it
2) Low power consumption (not sure what, but it's low)
3) The media sits as layers in a single basket, no strange compartments. This means you put whatever you want in it and accumulated crap stays at the bottom of the cannister.
4) If you use the Eheim filter media, you only ever need to clean it, never replace it (it's basically rocks) except for carbon.
5) No flow bypass. It's such a simple design that water MUST flow through the media (it's a cylinder within a cylinder)
6) I got mine with "no leak" connectors, so you can disconnect the lines, clean the filter and replace it without spilling water

cons -
Manual priming. Basically, after you set up the filter, you have to start the siphon by hand (this is only the first time, not after the lines are full of water like when you are cleaning the media and have the quick disconnects closed)

I really like the basket versus the multiple-compartments. I think at some point, all the cannister filters work basically the same. I think mine was $65 on eBay (new).

do you guys run the canisters inline with the drain so that all water going down to the sump goes through the canisters first?
Or is what i'm describing not good to do?

I have an Eheim the boxy looking ones and it self-primes - well sort of - you have to push down on the silver button on the top and it primes on it's own.

So micron filter socks would be a "no"?

I've never run a canister on saltwater, but I know they work just fine. I have a Fluval 404 on my 29gal freshwater and it works great. Silent as mentioned and seems to be reliable.

magma01: It sounds like sirhelm doesn't run a sump. Running a canister instead of a sump is just another way to do it. Running a canister inline with your drain would probably be really ineffective as a filter. If you've got a sump, filter socks seem to be the popular item for water polishing.

Sorry, I should mention that I run it on my freshwater tank! It's great. Or maybe it's just that most cannister filters are really good. The freshtank also has an eclipse hood, which I leave running even with the cannister on the tank because I like the bio-wheel and I have a ton of filter cartridges still.

I DO use the cannister on my salt tank when I want to run carbon though. I just dump out the freshwater media, then put carbon in the basket and run it on the salt tank, then switch back. (like after I've put flatworm exit or chemi-clean or something in the salt tank).

That is correct. I do not have a drilled tank nor a sump....

I do have a HOB fuge tho.... ;)

I was looking at the new Fluval FX-5 but a tad bit pricey for my liking..... LOL 349.00 retail... for a canister filter...... ouch..

Thanks for the advice on a canister.
