Which clown?

I'm thinking about setting up my first saltwater tank which would be a 55gallon FOWLR with a 30 gallon breeder tank as a sump. Here is the stocking I came up with at first.

1 flame angel Centropyge loricula
2 firefish Nemateleotris magnifica
1 yellow tang Zebrasoma flavescens
1 lawnmower blenny Salarias fasciatus
1 royal gramma Gramma loreto

Others around here said I should stay away from the tang because it needs a bigger tank and suggested I get a pair of clowns instead. What would be a good species of clown to get?

I think one yellow tang would be fine in that tank. Given that in nature it would cover several acres, or hectacres, in a given day, I wouldn't worry too much about a 4' tank vs a 6' tank too much.
I would put my focus on two things, excellent flow and loads of caves and other hiding places planned into your aquascape.

Oh yeah and I hope you don't plan on putting that 30 breeder under the 55 and not having it overhang.?.?.?.?.?.

Good luck!

Yeah I know the 30 is wider than the 55 but most likely the stand will be custom so I can either just make it wider or set it next to the stand on the floor. If that doesn't work I can always find a tank that will fit under there.

some true percula cause the black on them look really good but if u can get an onyx just like what brstwv mentioned get it because they are great looking percs. i have a pair of onyx and i got them from rods-reef i would recomend getting a onyx from rod because you can actually be sure that you are getting a real onyx and he is also a great person 2 talk 2

I think a 29 would fit under the stand FWIW. You really don't want the hassle of having to try to make a square peg fit in a round hole. Especially if you're new at this. The 30 breeder is a nice sized tank in it's own right. If you like clowns, it would make an excellent species tank.
- I agree with cro55f1r3 on the true percula thing. They are very nice looking fish.... The onyx perculas are a little over rated IMO, but I think I'm alone there. ;)
Good luck with your project! May you have many years of happy reefing.
