Which controller?

Hi all, I just started the cycle on a new 120g reef. I was looking at timers to control my 6 x 54w Sunpower light fixture which has 2 separate circuits controlling 2 bulbs & 4 bulbs. Then I also need a dual temperature controller for my heaters and a fan or chiller. So I'm already up to a couple hundred dollars. Can a basic controller (Reefkeeper / Aquacontroller / etc) do this for me plus more for just a few bucks more? I'm sure they're all good quality. Which one would be a good starter for a newbie that is expandable. Keep in mind that I'm computer illiterate. Thanks

I've always liked the Neptune Systems aquacontrollers (still sporting an ACjr on my 90g). I think both Neptune AquaControllers and DA Reefkeeper are excellent systems - perhaps if you can find one to get your hands on you can see which one feels better for you.

Just sold a Neptune Systems ACII and found a great deal on a DA Reefkeeper Elite.

Either the Neptune Systems Apex or the DA Reefkeeper Elite give you a lot of bang for the buck. They are both excellent systems and you can't beat Curt at Neptune Systems for Customer Support. I just prefer the interface and programming logic of the RKE to the Apex...it was a tough choice.

I you need just an entry level controller, DA's RKL seems to be a better value than the older ACJr (which I have on my Q tank). If you end up needing a more advanced controller, then the Neptune Apex (which I have on my DT) is objectively the better controller, but other than for customer service, the RK Elite has a lot of fans too.

In the end, controller technology today is so far ahead of where it was just 2 years ago, that you really can't go wrong. Just be sure not to by either entry level system if you will really need the more advanced features in the full controllers from either company.

I thought about going a lite route...but then thought about it and I just went ahead and got the APEX and couldnt be happier..I've learned so much more about my tank having it and can be hooked up to send you email alerts when something goes wrong..such a nice security blanket to have.

My tank is about 20 feet from the computer. Do any of the controllers hook up wirelessly? I'm creating a matrix now comparing them all. There are quite a few.

For the basic controller, it is hard to beat the Reefkeeper Lites, although they are limited to 4 modules. On the larger controllers, the Apex is a bit ahead of the RK Elite due to 3rd party pump control, but RK will have that eventually.

This is like a Coke or Pepsi question. You'll get a lot of pros and cons of each controller. I went the DA aquatics way and so far so good. My needs are pretty simple though. Timer for my lights. Controller for my heater, fan, and dosers. No internet connectivity for my controller.

OK, decision time. After looking at all the models and what they do for the last 2 days, I'm going with the Reefkeeper Elite plus. It looks like it has everything I need, and expandable if I need it at a later date. But for lights, heater / chiller / fan, ATO, it does what I need. Don't really NEED the Net connectivity right now. Thanks everyone.

I vote for Neptunes APEX all the way. Ive heard great things about the RKE as well, but I own a APEX and love it.

Neptune or Digital Aquatics..... Both are good controllers. Here is the primary difference. You will have the Digital aquatics controller up and running in one hour. You will spend a few days trying to grasp the instruction manual for Neptune. If you still dont understand it I hear they have good customer service at Neptune. Although, Im not a rocket scientist you shouldnt have to be to use a controller. My vote is Digital Aquatics for Reef Keeper or Reek keeper lite. Ive used both Apex and Reef Keeper Elite. Sold my Apex.
