Which fish should I get

Smiling here ...

Reading down, was about to chip in with my reassurances, but it looks as though you don't really need them any more!

I've got a Lubbock's and two flashers in a tank with a mated pair of firefish. One of the fires is out from the moment the blue lights come on in the morning, the other doesn't put in an appearance until early afternoon. They've got distinct personalities!

Glad to see that your two have cleared up their issues.

Yeah, mine sleeps in while the other fish are being fed in the morning.

unless you find one that's eating prepared food, i doubt it will survive. a 4 month old tank won't have enough pods. tank size is sketchy. you will need tons of rock piles and no pod eating fish

I currently have a ton of live rock and no other fish that would eat pods. LiveAquaria recommends 30 gallons. Do you think I could pull it off?

Filefish

Filefish

Hello Everyone,
I have a 37 gallon saltwater tank and I wanted to put in a filefish. The best one for my tank would be a matted filefish but I do have a hermit crab and a chocolate chip starfish. My concern is that the filefish will eat the hermit and the starfish. Thoughts?
Thanks

Yes, yellow tang, powder blue tang, hippo tang will also work for a 37g.

As long as they don't grow any larger.

And by that I mean they are made of plastic.

A filefish is a terrible choice for a 37...you want small fish.gobies,blennies,wrasse,firefish...ect
The bigger your fish, the smaller your tank looks, along with all the nutrient problems that come with larger fish

I know for a fact that chocolate chip starfish will eat fish. They will eat anything that is alive, very bad and IMO they are only good to raise their legs to feed Harlequin shrimp. Several in a sump can remove one leg per starfish to feed the shrimp and the legs grow back.

Yes this tank is at it's fish limit I agree.

You don't have room for any more fish in there.
Salt water fish are kind of special because they are almost always caught in the ocean and shipped to a store. Being wild animals, they need a good amount of personal space.
If you overcrowd the tank they will kill each other, or be stressed out and get sick.

I really think you should put all of your fish questions in one thread and not 5 or 6 like you have. People seeing only one or two of them have no idea of what is going on because you're all over the place. You can ask a mod to combine all of them together and I highly suggest that you do this. It is in your best interest.

I think in a tank that size and that old his chances of making it are zero. Sorry to be blunt about it. Research and read the thousands of posts here that folks put up trying to keep finicky eaters and compare them to the successful ones.

There are lots of fish I wish I could own and choose not to because my tank is not ideal for their needs. Dragonets and mandarins are probably the number one fish to starve to death in aquariums because they are cheap, beautiful, and LFS fail to say no to everyone who wants one just to make a few bucks. If I owned a store i would probably make them "special order" fish for serious aquarists only. Sorry for ranting, and I don't mean to assume you don't have the time or knowledge to keep one alive. I just hope my post discourages you from getting one until you have the right conditions for one.

+1 The odds are against.

I wouldnt recommend it... I tried a small kole tang in my 40 and it got super aggressive and killed any other algae eaters in the tank. I had a blue and a small vlamingy in a 75 years ago that did well in my 75 before I knew any better.

Filefish

Filefish

Hello Everyone,
I have a 37 gallon saltwater tank and I wanted to put in a filefish. Which to get?

Which to get?

Hello,
I have a 37 gallon saltwater tank and I wanted a blenny that doesn't get to large but will eat some algae that I have on the glass. Please let me know ones that won't get very big

Scooter will wipe your pod population in a couple of days. Lawn mower likes to scrape algae, but is more likely to eat fish food so I vote for Lawn mower.

Yes, the filefish will eat the starfish, then he'll chew up the glass tank. If your tank is acrylic, then you are OK, they don't eat acrylic, but they do eat glass.
