Ok I have a Canon Rebel XTI and I was wondering what lens/lenses ya'll would recommend getting for good close up shots of zoas and other corals?
Any help would be appreciated.

maybe I should have posted my price limit lol
Just looked them up and they are going for $300 used on ebay

Looking for a lens around the $100 price range

I agree with Rich. I'm not aware of a Macro lens in that price range, and if there is one, I'm not sure it's one you would want to own (n.b. that doesn't mean there isn't one, just that I'm not aware of it).

Your best bet if you want to spend around 100.00 is to get a set of extension tubes, they will allow you to focus closer with any lense.

But, a true macro is going to be your best bet, and for 100.00 you are not going to be happy with any macro you buy for that price. I myself am saving my nickels for a 100mm 2.8 macro, but getting buy with extension tubes.

You can also buy the magnifying filters, getting a "good" quality one in the 75 to 100 dollar range, but again, these are bandaids, a "good" macro will be your best bet.

Another alternative is to "rent" and see if that is really what you want before you dole out the money. check out lensrentals.com they are good folks to deal with.

I have a Canon Rebel XSi and was also wondering which macro to get, and I ended up choosing the Canon 100mm.

I just ordered it so I will let you know about it later in the week.

Another option is to rent a lens. There are a few companies online that rent lenses (rentglass.com) or stop by your local camera shop and ask if they rent lenses. It was the option I went with when I was shopping to pick up a new lens for my camera.

the Tamron 90mm or Sigma 105mm have performance on a parr with the Canon lens and are much cheaper. Build quality isn't as good but they are correspondingly lighter and potentially better balanced on an xsi.

$300 IS cheap!
There's a Canon 500D diopter for around $100....
Maybe you can get a $100 Vivitar/Phoenix macro lens for a Canon mount....but you get what you pay for ;)

I'm sure I'm not the first person who's said this, but I've lost count of the number of times I've seen someone with less than 50 posts ask this question (and other similar redundant questions). It's unfortunately a side effect in any forum where posting is encouraged through incentives...I hope they pay you Beerguy!

...sorry I've always wanted to say that :P

That's true, however, I've also lost track of the number of times people with well over the 50 posts have asked redundant questions, so I'm not sure there's a direct correlation.

Just got it a few days ago and I wasn't very satisfied at first but that was because I was shooting handheld without a tripod. Then I got my tripod and now I love the lens ;)

What other lenses do you have? A lot of the "cheaper" macro solutions unfortunately have the side effect in that their focusing distance is very short. For a lot of macro stuff they can work pretty well, for fish tank stuff though because of the short focusing distance anything you want to take pictures of will have to be VERY close to the glass.

As has been said in this thread, you won't find a macro lens for $100. About the cheapest lens I can think of that could obtain 1:1 would be the nifty fifty (Canon 50mm f/1.8) mounted on a full set (68mm) of extension tubes or mounted backwards on the camera using a reversing ring. Nifty fifty will run ~$80 new and a set of extension tubes with electrical contacts will run ~$70 for an ok set. Reversing ring will run somewhere around $10 but you'll lose electrical contact so you won't be able to adjust aperture or autofocus (AF being minor since you usually don't AF with macro anyhow). If you have the kit lens already you can just buy a reversing ring to mount it backwards on the camera (it works surprisingly well as a macro) which will run you somewhere around $10, but again you lose electrical contact and it may be of limited use for fish tank stuff because of the extremely short focusing distances you'll encounter.

:) Or you can wait and save your money until you can afford a true macro lens.
