Hi, i have a nikon d90, and am thinking of buying a macro lens for it to take pictures of my aquarium. Does anyone have the Tamron 90mm F2.8? how is this compared to the Nikon 105mm? Thanks.

Optically, most 100mm range macros are all excellent (Tamron 90, Tokina 100, Sigma 105 and Nikon 105). The Nikon costs a lost more (at least the VR version does). Whether it is worth the extra money is a personal decision but, most people can take excellent macro photos with the third party macros). I'm going with the Sigma, at least partly because the others are hard to get in Canada (Tamron hasn't yet released their new model of the 90mm in Canada). But, you won't go wrong with any of these lenses.

yes, the nikon 105 is pretty much double the price of the tamron. if the tamron is around the same as the nikon, then i would rather save that amount of money.
is there any difference regarding focusing speed?

For macros, most focusing is done manually. The AF system on the Tamron 90 uses the in-camera AF motor. The new version of the lens (still to be released in Canada) uses an internal AF motor. The AF speed on the current Tamron isn't great, but then no macro lens is known for fast AF speed. Haven't seen comments but the new version might be faster.

Back when I first became interested in photography I talked with a professional photographer that works locally. She does mostly portraits now, senior pictures, weddings, that sort of thing, but she spoke very highly of the Tamron lenses.

She also shot with Pentax bodies, so take it with a grain of salt, but it's always been my impression that Tamron makes excellent lenses.
