Which tang eats algae the best?

I have a regal tang who I grazes on rocks much less than my orange shouldered tang.

What tang is the best algae grazer? And is my regal tang just different? should he be eating algae more aggressively?

A lot of people (myself included) are fans of the Ctenochaetus species- kole tangs, chevrons, etc. They keep themselves pretty busy browsing for algae.

As for your tang, that species isn't great for algae. Regal/hippo tangs eat a lot of zooplankton and aren't as much of a grazing type as the other tangs.

I agree kole tang is probably one of the best... I wouldn't recomend a Vlamingi tang even though they do an ok job, they get to big for most people tanks in this hobby.

I think the regal tang is probably one of worst tang grazers..

another vote for the kole tang! however they do need lots of space to graze. at least 4' wide, if not 6...

Naso and Paracanthurus (Hippo) Tangs are planktivores and grow large (ie: poor choice for grazing algae in an aquarium). Stick to Zebrasoma or Ctenochaetus for algae.

I vote for the yellow tang! I've heard that Kole tangs can be very agressive but I guess lots of other tangs are too.

my yellow grazes all day too, but when i had my yellow eye kole, he was crazy about eating. it was a nonstop feast!!!
