Which to buy???

Not true for everyone.

It all depends on the average climate of where you live, where you plan to install the tank, the type of your little abode (dorm, apartment, high rise, basement, etc...), and maybe a number of other things... Such as how you heat/chill your residence.

Personnaly I live in a high rise apartment building in a rainy (but temperate) city and I do not need a chiller and I do not need a heater either...

You actually will probably need a generator. Being you folks lost power this winter for something like a week. Hell people were dieing, forget the corals and fish.

My mom lives in Renton and said how it was 40 degrees in her house for about 7 days. No electricity.

So yes climate does play a factor.

Here in So Cal, I use a heater and a chiller.

All Delight:

Thanks for the advice... But Downtown Seattle (where I am happy to live) never lost power during the worst of last winter storm when we had Hurricane force winds. Not even for five minutes... Actually, Downtown never lost power since a long long time... In Renton, 15 miles south in Suburbia, that was another story indeed... Some people died from Carbon Monoxyde intoxications when trying to heat their homes with wet wood and bbq's...

I placed my clam in the middle of my RSM tank to get full lighting...I recently got a small Acro frag that I'm watching to see how well it grows...so far it's holding it's colour well...it's also situated mid-level...

I have mine set up in the basement...so I don't need to worry about a chiller...just the heater...

Don't let Laurent's article put you off...lol...I have no complaints and as I said...I've done no mods whatsoever...

So to sum it up, RSM is the way to go unless you have your heart set on SPS. Buy a JBJ if you want a smaller tank with SPS. Buy a Cadlights if you have a time machine, so you can buy it in the future.

Well, I guess I better figure out what I want to keep in there and the difference between SPS and LPS (other than one is small polyps and the other is large polyps) and their needs. Books ordered from Amazon should be here this week.

I really like the corals in this tank here: http://rsmreefers.com/gallery37.htm, not sure if they are sps or lps - Im thinking sps so they must have done a mod on the lights?? YUP, JUST LOOKED INTO THIS ON THE WEBSITE AND THAT TANK HAS A NANO CUSTOMS 150W MH MOD DONE TO IT.

I also think its pretty neat that the "RSM" owners have their own club/website.

I am not sure if I would need a chiller or not. I would be keeping this tank in my home office which stays quite warm with all my computer stuff and lights (including one metal halide pendant) for my aquariums and dart frogs. It is also one of 3 rooms that is on central air. I guess my best bet would be to really monitor the room temperature and turn the ac on before it gets too hot. (thermostat in another room). Weather here in New England can be quite varied in the summer. We usually get a few days of temps over 90 but thats about it.

Thanks everyone for your great tips, feel free to keep them coming as Im not going to rush right out and buy something for the sake of buying....

summitwynds:

I would vote for the RSM. Granted they do have some flaws (Skimmer, Hood fans, and Timer needed to be replaced so far for me) but I have been very happy with mine.

If the room has central air in the summer I think you will be fine as far as temp goes. I also live in Central Mass (Go Sox). Remember the crazy temps we had a few weeks back when it was in the 90's. I had already taken out my AC, when I got home that day my tank temp reached 87 degrees and I lost my flame angel. I will be looking into a chiller for my setup for those unexpected hot days.

Hi fellow Central Mass-er! Yeah, go Sox!!! Crazy fall temperatures for sure. Like you said there aren't too many days that it gets real hot, but there are enough to worry about. It has to be pretty hot out for our house to get hot and thats without the AC on in that part of the house. But I will have to keep a good eye on the temps though and turn the AC on in time. For the past 2 years we have had AC, I have not had any issues with my dart frogs or freshwater tank in the AC part. Dont have to worry about the discus tank in the non-AC part of the house.

Yah I think if you do decide to go with a RSM and stick with the stock lighting you should be fine as far as heat issues go.

It really is a great tank, Red Sea has done a great job with how everything blends together. Like I said there are a few issues like the skimmer. Most people who own these tanks will tell you that the stock skimmer is useless. Other than that Red Sea's customer service is exceptional. If you have any problems they seem to get back to you right away.

Good luck with your decision.

Rue:

There is also a lot of GOOD in my article :)
And I have not put my RSM on eBay yet... ;)

Oh I know you wrote a lot about the 'good'...but still:

The Bad, Ugly and Irritating

...doesn't sound too flattering...

Here's a pic of my clam taken today:

difficult to decides

I can understand how you feel summitwynds because Iève been reading on nano for the past 2 weeks and I donèt know which one is the best. I will be moving in february and I have to get rid of my 90G tank.
there is no way I can keep my blue spot sqamosa clam in a nano tank however I would like to keep few acanthastrea , zoathid and maybe a piece of frog spawn. With all that thing said, I will need a nano tank with a skimmer if I want to keep everything alive.

I think there is only the RSM and the JBJ 28G who are offering build in skimmer.....

Mh or T5 are two very good lighting option. Better then power compact. I'm aiming for the RSM if I can find a good deal in the US becuase in canada itès almost 1000$ + tx. for that model. Where can I get a good deal for the red sea max...??

Jarjar - Marine Depot has the tank, stand and red sea starter kit for $799 US. Not sure what shipping is though.

I have seen the RSM for 599$ online.... Let me see if I can find it. I also saw it for $619 with free shipping... Going searching for you. A LFS in NH is getting one today :( but I have to leave today for OH. Im hoping it will still be there on Tuesday so I can check it out. Im not ready to buy quite yet though... got a couple poison dart frogs/vivs to sell first.
