Which tripod legs for a short person?

I'm between the Manfrotto 190PROB and the 055PROB. Originally I was thinking that I'd go with the 055 since it's sturdier, and only about $30.00 more. But I also have to consider that I'm short... 5' 2.25". Anyone able to recommend the better choice for me?

btw... the head I've chosen is the 498RC2 b/c I want the pan feature.

Thanks!
Sandra

Hi Sandra,

I don't know much about either but just wanted to make sure you saw and read the sticky on tripods. Lot's of good info there. Always tradeoffs, weight, cost, ease of use, and of course it depends on your intended use (studio, outddors, car shooting, backpacking). In general you want the sturdiest tripod you can get. Buy a good one the first time or else you'll just end up upgrading down the road. In the end you actually spend more that way! Also depends on what sort of gear your using. Big difference if it is a Pro body with a 600mm lens vs a prosumer body with a 24-105. Make sure you read the thread :).

Oh, and BTW, my tripod extends over my head. In deep snow when I am on ski's or snowshoes, shooting off a ledge, or on a steep hill, sometimes I appreciate that extra leg length/height.

Yup... went for the 055! And fortunately the head was on sale... now just have to wait for it to come in. :bounce1: <-- wait... is it odd that I'm excited for a tripod :crazy1:

not wierd at all! Enjoy it! It makes things much more enjoyable when you're using good equipment.

I have the older version of the 055PROB (3021BPRO) that I have absolutely no problems with. The biggest "con" I have with it is it is heavy. That is one of the trade-offs with tripods though, when you're shopping for a tripod you have three choices: cost, weight, and sturdiness. You can have two but not all three. Is it Gitzo? Absolutely not, but it was also considerably cheaper than the next level up in legs that offer stability and weight.

055PROB is an extremely popular set of legs and should do you just fine :D.

Thanks IPT & Dino! I'm really looking forward to trying it out! Now I'm on the hunt for a good price on a canon 100mm macro! Hopefully it won't take all year to find that good price *fingers crossed*

if you find one, act fast. I think they are a highly sought after lens :).
