White Mark on Lineatus Fairy Wrasse - Ideas?!?! (Video)

Hey guys,

Noticed a white mark on our Lineatus Fairy Wrasse today.

He's pretty hard to take a picture of since he never stops moving.

Around the 1:15 on mark you can see it well. Best view around 1:30.

It's on his side if his head is facing left.

Possible tang / rock scratch?

Or...

Something worse...?

No new addition to the tank in about 1.5 months, which were quarantined fish. Not seeing other marks on other fish.

Watching the video in HD will let you see it better:

Hard to say for sure. Looks like it might be an abrasion from a rock. Assuming your quarantine protocol is sound, I would rule out disease after 6 weeks of no symptoms. How is his behavior otherwise? Eating normally?

Beautiful fish, BTW.

He's always been a bit shy. I saw the Chevron Tang dart at him once while watching today.

They both hang out in the same area and they tend to not be as active when the lights are bright as the other fish.

Eating like a pig.

He was in QT for about 8 weeks. 3 treatments of PraziPro and 30 days straight of ParaGuard.

Fish that went in after had the same protocol, only 5-6 weeks though.

It's been at least 6 weeks since the last fish (or anything) was added to the tank.

Never used Paraguard, so I can't comment on its effectiveness. If it's a scrape, it should heal up in a few days. Nothing wrong with paranoia in this hobby. :)

Only thing I could think disease-wise would be brooklynella...

But I doubt that would show up so much later. Maybe also a fungus...

Hopefully either from a Tang or rock scrape...

Thanks guys, he's a great fish :)

Get's along great with our flame pair and cleaner wrasses :)

Had to end up moving the Lineatus to our frag tank.

He had most of his tail nipped off. I caught a Crosshatch Trigger going after him. Also the Yellow Belly Blue Tang kept rushing him.

I think the Trigger picked up that the fish wasn't doing well and took it as a sign of weakness. The Triggers haven't bother any other much smaller fish...

Going to get a Female Lineatus to go along with the male and introduce together after she is quarantined. I feel that the Lineatus needs to be kept in pairs. Our Flame Wrasses are doing perfect in the tank... everyone leaves them alone. Guess Fairy Wrasses are just social fish and need to be in groups to thrive...

However, in the presence of Paraguard, that is not necessarily the case. Large P. hepatus can be ornery.

Thanks Steve,

The marks went away, but then I noticed the Lineatus hanging out more and more at the top of the tank.

Over a few days his tail started disappearing, then I saw the Crosshatch biting him.

I think the Lineatus really needs a female, so I'll try to re-introduce after QTing a female.

Also will be another 5-10 fish in the tank before they go back in.

Feel that the larger the number of fish, the lower aggression seen...

Found him this morning in the frag tank with a bunch of snail on him :(

I guess the injury to his tail and also the stress of moving tanks was too much.

He's always been an extremely shy fish... I wonder if having him in the large tank with a female might have help his chances...

That sucks, sorry for the loss Peter. What was your take on the paraguard? I have dosed it like seachem recommends and for 30 days and after using literally liters of it I'm sure it really does what it's suppose to. I like it for dips prior to QT but I question the effectiveness of it for irradiating disease in a tank even after prolonged use. I was a day away from having the 5.3g or whatever it is drop shipped from seachem.. At 240$ I opted not to, and lack of effectiveness (at least IMO)

IMO, I do not think that would have helped.
