Hi I'm new to the nano reef seen and have these weird white strings that popped up above my flame scallops thos morning when I woke up was wondering if anyone would be able to tell me what they are thank you

A pic would help a lot. How new is the tank? Flame scallops are quite sensitive & usually don't live long in our tanks.

The tank is about a month old

It's what they use to attach themselves to things. Sorry, I'm really tired today and can't think of the correct terms.

I think those white things your seeing might be called "byssal filaments." Like mentioned above, mollusks will use them to attach themselves to hard surfaces.

Hmm, did you just put the flame scallops in there, or have they been there a while? I've never seen a Lima species attached with byssal threads, but I suppose it's possible that they produce them. However, that would be a LOT of byssal threads, and I really doubt you'd find that many discarded overnight?

Cheers,

Don

OK, I answered my own question...Lima scabra does produce byssal threads, and may attach semi-permanently, but can still release the threads if it needs to move. Yours may have been trying, unsuccesfully, to attach to something, and ended up with remnants stuck to the glass?
