White tiger goby - Priolepis nocturna - experiences?

I purchased this fish about a week ago, and haven't seen him since the first couple days. Since my live rock is basically just pillars, there aren't a ton of places he could be hiding. So when do I start to worry? I thought maybe I'd at least see him during feeding time, but no luck. Anyone else have experience with this fish?

gobies do hide alot, but it still should come out to eat.

I have one now going on a year and a half and sometimes I can go a month or more without seeing him. When I think he's dead or forget about him he appears and eats some food and I remember I have one of them in my tank, their tough little guys he started out in a 55 then a 120 and now a 240.

Hi Peter,

I have two pairs and I believe there are even two species. The one shown on the picture is only black and white and gets much bigger then the one which also ahs some yellow between the black.

They do best if kept in pairs, need overhangs to hang below, will stay in the shade, prefer mysid shrimps as food, prefer sand ground as they dig hide outs under stones (at least the black and white - my couple with yellow does so far not dig), both pairs are spawning.

Sandsifter, isn't he? PRobably digging his burrow. This can take a while. Meanwhile he'll eat detritus in the sand he moves.

Thanks for the info Peter! How did you sex them? I'm glad I bought the kind with some yellow between the stripes then, since I don't really have any sand in the tank yet.

Sk8r, they are not sand sifters.

OK, after about 10 minutes with a flashlight last night, I found him. He's just hanging out between the rocks, upside down

Do I worry about target feeding or will he eventually shoot out of his hiding place to grab some food when he gets hungry enough?

Well looks who's decided to show his face...

I shot some mysis behind the rock where he hangs out, so I think maybe eating something made him more comfortable. Cool little fish!

I have a pair that I purchased in Dec 2004.I have seen them maybe a dozen times.I have them in a BB SPS tank,and the rock sits up on a PVC rack.They hide up in the rock bottoms.They have grown quite a bit-especially the male.He will dart out on a rare occasion for a piece of food-the female has never come out.
I purchased another pair of Priolepis a few months ago.I have not identified the species.Theare much smaller-I believe they are full grown at 1".They are translucent,and mostly light yellow with some red in them.They are much more active than the nocturas and always come out to feedThe female always appears to be pregnant,but that is just conjecture.

How do you know they are pairs when you buy them? Can I get mine a buddy? Can they be sexed?

I had no idea that the gobies were a pair when I got them.I am simply stating they are pairs since they are always together and never fight.

I have had one for a little over a year now, and I never see it. It hangs upside down in the small caves and only moves when it is feeding time. Even then, it is a trick to try and see it. If I watch for a long time without moving, I sometimes can see it move from level to level in the caves. It never comes out into open water.
