Who am I (weird basslet)?

Hey, I have been doing this for a while, and this is the first time I have come across this fish - he is about 4 - 5", and I am pretty sure he came out of Hawaii.

I am sure he is most likely in the Kuiter book, but all my reference books are currently in storage.

That is a juvenile grouper - Gracila albomarginata. Unfortunately, the pretty juvenile colors don't last too long and they get about 18" long.

These guys have been coming in lately. I hadn't seen any for years up until a few months ago. The juvis are jumpers, so becareful.

Wow! Yours sure is a lot more colorful than I've seen once they reach that size. The ones that I have worked with lost that purple color at around 2". They are a deeper water fish, the ones that I've seen were collected further west than Hawaii - usually off the coast of Africa. Here is what I wrote about them in my Advanced Marine Aquarium Techniques book (and the fish pictured in the book was about 4" long and had almost no purple color at all remaining!).

White Masked Grouper, Gracila albomarginalis, Serranidae

Small juveniles of this species are perhaps the most fantastically colored member of this family, being bright purple and red in color. Rarely if ever collected at this stage, most imports are of fish that have already begun their transition to the duller white and gray adult coloration. Less expensive than the related Pollen’s grouper, they are likewise very shy and reclusive when first acclimated to an aquarium.

I don't think so. An intersting idea would be to keep him till he's ugly then serve him up!

Oh well, I was hoping I had a bassLET, not a bass on my hands. I guess its time to pull him out of the reef, and start looking for someone with a big tank (or invite Kent E over for a BBQ ;) ). Thanks for the info guys.
