So seems like we've gotten a bunch of people leaving hobby lately for a diverse number of reasons...

So who are the newbies?
Come on, speak up so we can make sure to introduce ourselves to you and help you along with the hobby.

Any newbies coming to upcoming meeting? What advice do you need? How can we help?

My tank has only been setup for a little over 2 months (really!). Does that make me a noob? ;)

I need help convincing Grant that this is the time to install the tank of his dreams. Can you please assist?

Ok, I realize that this is not sync with the intent of this thread, and for that I apologize. Grant should still upgrade his tank now, however. :D

Is Ken the only noob? :)

No need to be bashful. We don't bite!

And +1 on Grant's new, much bigger tank. I don't think we get a vote, but it's fun to vote anyway!!

If Kenny's only been around for two months then I've only been around for 3 and hear this other new guy down in Petaluma. I think his names Grant go a little more time in than me:lmao:

I know a newbie... me! I made it to the frag swap and hope to make to the next meet. I have to admit my first tank was trial and error... mostly error. I inherited a tank with lots of problems - free from craigslist. Since then I have run two different nano tanks. My current tank came from JoFish. There are a lot of newbie reefers, but typically they start out with nano tanks. They are attractive because of their price. Hey, we all to start somewhere.

Good one Bob! :lol2:

Welcome jellyfishjosh! Yes, nano tanks are popular and there are some gorgeous nanos out there.

JoFish is a good place to shop.

Please come to our upcoming meeting. Attendance is free, and you'll meet a bunch of enthusiastic reefers. We'll have you going from trial and error to trial and success!

Ken

@jellyfishjosh welcome! Looking forward to meeting you in person!

Any questions or needs, feel free to post something and ask the group. Great bunch of helpful people around.

What do you have in your tank and what type of tank are you planning to keep?

Welcome Jellyfishjosh! Hope to see you at the next meeting as well:) The Picasso/Humu trigger in your avatar is a great fish. I picked up one recently for the office tank at it has a lot of personality. Only downside is he made quick work of my clean up crew haha.

I am a noob in reef keeping I have had my Reef tank set up for almost a year. will be a year in june but i have had a saltwater tank for about ten years. Not much in my reef tank... and i am upgraded to ecoxotic panorama marines. got the 1st 24 inch one now waiting on the second one i will also be suppliment the leds with 2 24 watt t5hos. started the tank with 4 24 watt t5hos. its a 29 gallon all glass. first upgrade i did was a cpr overflow box with a 15 gallon sump. tank running great.

Thanks guys and gals i would love to start coming to the meetings i got in contact with i think grant a while back about some zoo frags but never ending getting any from him. Hey Robert! I'm Colin and if your a zoa fan we def have some serious zoa collectors in the club. In our raffles you can find some really nice Z adn P's;) as well as some really nice sps. But I mainly go for the food

Welcome Robert, aka ikwksvt! Hope you can make it to the next meet on the 21st.

I was going to say send a pm if you need help posting pics but I noticed you are really new on RC. I think you need 10+ posts to be able to PM. So post lots! :)

where is the next meeting going be and ill try to make it.... ill figure out how to post a pic my profiile pic isfrom my tank. I am off for now time to do a water change while thwife make dinner.

Well, I guess I would be a newbie to the group. Have been doing the SW hobby for many years now. Started with 45g Hex. I think the original owner of it was named Rick, so of you may know him. My wife bought the tank for x-mas. Hid the tank in the garage for 2 weeks (huge garage).
Unfortunately, I'm always so busy with family, that I never can make it to the meetings. Work on the tank after midnight.

Me and my girlfriend are just getting into the saltwater tanks now. I have maintained several fresh water tanks with different types of freshwater fish (i.e. African Cichlids, cats and a carp pond). We were given a 75 gallon tank and after mulling it over and a recent trip to the local aquarium store today we have decided to take the leap to the dark side :strooper: haha . I look forward to all the help this forum has to offer and promise that we will need it as we start off with a FOWLR and continue to add corals.

JD and Nikki,
Welcome to the club!

We'll all be glad to help. Our meetings are usually every 2 months and we just had one in April. So we'll probably meet up in June or July. Meetings usually Petaluma, Santa Rosa, or Windsor, depending on which member wants to host (or sometimes a LFS hosts).

Ask any questions on the forum and usually a few people will respond within a day or two.

Our new president starting feb 2013 is "Jay" (dragonvale). Colin(cbrennan4) &john(aquanut) are our VPs.

For fowlr, get good skimmer, use any type of lights since temperature swings less of issue since no corals... Consider buying GiantBen's "shallow tank". Although you guys have a tank already.

Reef tanks are usually more enjoyable "deep" (front to back). So a 24" deep tank is good. 18" deep just feels not "3D" enough (at least for me)...

The shallow tanks just look nice.

Also, make sure to get fish you will want to keep when you transition to reef tank. Often fowlr tanks have fish that may eat corals, etc. things like pufferfish, box fish, lion fish, triggers....

Also trying to get rid of a 3-6" fish is sometimes difficult unless buyer has a 200+ gallon tank. That means don't overfeed the fish or they may grow too big too fast.

In the wild, fish may or may not eat every day, so they can survive off one meal a day (at least that is my philosophy).
