Who are the SPS Veterans?

Hey Jake, aren't you supposed to be in Holland right now. Wait, that would explain the smoking smilie, though :bum: would have been better.:D

Jake you remember Noel too right. He'd meet locals in a Hifi Buys parking lot to sell frags. His farm was strictly off-limits, which led some to suspect that it was a chop-shop operation. They were suspicions that were never proven or dismissed, just what I heard. Not trying to speak badly of him at all, just remembering how odd it was to meet him in a parking lot of a stereo store. Back then, Dana was still at the Aquatic Wildlife Center with the Ebb and Flow turf scrubbers. Those things were cool!

Remember Thiel? He lives down the road from me, but doesn't do anything with reefs anymore, no tanks at home or anything.

The Atlanta scene kind of stalled when I showed up.:( Missed Denver when I arrived. At least we had Jake bringing in some cool stuff. Now that we have Carlson building what will be an amazing Aquarium here in Atlanta, I have hope that the reefing scene will blossom again!:)

Mark,,, Im back in atlanta,,, LOL,, and Dana still comes back here to visit his kids..:) I went to FS&M yesterday,, Yikes! Prices!

As far as Noel goes,, Ihavent heard anything from him,, rumor was he passed away,, but steve tyree told me he traded some corals within the last year,,, His old phone number doesnt work though..

Whatever happened to Thiel? He just sorta disappeared...I heard he was very sick. That was quite a while ago though...

d.

Yeah, Thiel is still in business, but in some other type of business, forgot what it was. Not reef related though.

Nuclear,
Welcome back! Nice to have another sps nut in town. Definitely check out Cappucino Bay Aquarium. It's probably the nicest store in Atlanta. They bring in Bali acros, and unique lps/clams.

I agree with you though, no matter where you go, prices are really high in Atlanta.:( Even Atlantic corals are expensive here. I miss all the local sps farmers back in Denver. It was fun bringing some cash to a person's house and getting some killer home grown frags.

welll,Im hoping once I get totally settled here to start some aq myself and maybe have a few other people pitch in on it.. we'll see how it goes,, But I can definatley see room for aquacultured stuff here.....

I had my S/W aquarium set up in 1979 and although there were no SPS available, I thought I'd reflect some of the other big differences.
First, since there was no internet, information was stovepiped through independent channels. We just didn't have the knowledge nor the availability.
Most impressive to me is to look at pictures of the old tanks, with the coral skeleton decorations. Since I was in South Florida I still have some monster elkhorn skeletons along with several other types. Doesn't anyone have any pictures to post?
Finally, the discovery of live rock as a filtering source was not in handd. For a while there, someone must have made a lot of money from all of the gadgets that were thought to be required. Although I still find myself wanting to purchase lots of toys!
Reminiscing is so much fun.....

Thiel surely did.:) His platinum wet dry's were cool looking!

I remember the days before the internet. My only sources of info were Sprung's Reef Notes(I miss that column) and Delbeek's numerous articles in AFM. Remember when VHO and HO was the choice lighting, and metal halides were considered controversial. I remember several debates in Reef notes where people wrote in on the dangerous levels of uv in metal halides. Sprung debunked them though.

And who could forget the whole Adey/Sprung clash. That was epic at the time. At least for me.

I wonder if anyone of the longtime guys have actual pieces of their first acros. You know from way back.

Also what changes they noticed in them since they first got them.

I think someone mentioned the Larry Jackson Purple tip SPS.

The Larry Jackson is an oldie but goodie, in terms of sps-hobby age. There are some others. The Bali Green Slimer had been around for a while as well.

Sang,

Sorry for the late reply. Bullets are not the only thing you have to worry about in the Solomons. Dave P. can tell you stories about people getting their heads chopped off. Also, ask the senior Macare about his missonary days there. People would just vanish. Never to be seen again. Of course, that latter problem can also occur here in Los Angeles ! The best time I had at Macna this year was listening to some old trade stories about collecting trips down to Mexico.

The trip up north got cancelled. Might reschedule later.

Hello All,

Yes, I did speak with Noel earlier in the year. He ordered some fragments. And I am sorry Noel, I let the cat out of the bag. He told me to keep the transaction private. Well, I did for over 6 months ! Have not spoken to him since though. He stated that he was slowly getting back into the hobby. Dont know if he has any business plans.

Tony,

Nice seeing you in Boston earlier in the year. I have not been in contact with Bob Mankin for years. Last I heard his wife got cancer and he was spending his time with that unfortunate circumstance.

Acropora back in 1988 ? Thats news. Hopefully you have some pictures. Would love to see them. I can see how you could keep Acro alive under Mercury Vapor lamps (green), however they would not look very colorful. You definitly cannot keep them alive under Low Pressure Sodium bulbs (orange). I do remember Tropical Marine Paradise. I even sent them some acro in the mid to early 1990's. Also heard from the owner about you crazy people who would wait for him to return from the airport ! You guyz are definitly hardcore acro keepers.
