Marc, I've got to agree that it's expensive and addictive -- but then over the years, I've found that most of the really fun things are :D

So true..If it is not a sports car, motorcycle, jet ski or 4x4 , now Wife.. I seam to always find something to waste my money.hahahah:rollface:

A friend gave me his old 55 with all the freshwater toys, and my wife popped up and said "Let's do saltwater". The rest is history. Little did she know what she was getting me into. Now I'm hooked with a 90, and telling her, "We need........"

melev's stupid websight lol.

I'd say the same for me :p If he hadn't made the information so readily available I probably wouldn't have gotten into the hobby.

Thanks Melev!

My house got me started - sounds weird ?

you got that right.

I watched a documentary when I was about 4 years old called "Seasons of the Sea" by National Geographic. I had wanted one ever since then and that is also what got me involved in marine biology. So, after 4 more years, I was finally able to set up my first marine aquarium--a 29 gallon FO (liverock wasn't really readily available in my area then).

Mom bought me a Little Mermaid tank when I was 5 years old...so I guess it was the Little Mermaid that got me into the hobby.

For me, it was moving out. Ever since I can remember, I've had fish tanks and been obsessed with them. Because of all the bad rumors of marine aquariums being "hard" or "expensive", I've never started one as a child. Instead I busied myself with books and trips to the library to study. After I moved out and got married I realized that I wear the pants in the house (for now) and make the money, so I'm going to try a saltwater tank out. Here I am a few years later with a few healthy reef tanks.

I heard the samethings about saltwater fish and stuff before I started. I started with a 10gallon fresh water tank and wow I never kept a fish longer than a week. Fresh water seemed harder. O.o

My parents bought a guppy tank when I was about 5. Shortly thereafter, the guppies had babies. The first batch of baby guppies got eaten by their parents. Next batch prompted another tank. Sound familiar.

A college dorm mate showed me his aggressive saltwater tank and I was hooked.

In 1987 the addiction kicked in and I've been keeping reefs ever since.

My family went to Bermuda when I was 11 years old to visit my aunt and uncle. They had a 20g freshwater tank that I was absolutely captivated by. I saved what pennies I could and bought a 10g set-up, freshwater which I had until college. I got back inot the hobby with a salt fo tank 10 yaers ago. Now I"m going reefing!!!

My wife purchased a 29g tank with blue rock from Wally World...the rest is history. Actually, I started reading about saltwater tanks after three months of FW and got bit by the bug...the rest is all downhill:D
