Who has a clam tank?

What made you decide to do this? What have you done differently or special to make your tank a better home for clams? Any problems you've encountered? Any benifets you have seen with this set up?

I have a 57 gallon clam tank, 34inchs long 30 wide and 13 inches tall, wth 20 degree glass pains on each side. The reason I bought the tank was to see the true neon colors of the clams, and my 75 is over stocked so I decided to use this tank for a clam refugium..plumbed into my 75 gallon sps reef. So basicly ill add 50 somethng gallons to the system plus a new basic refugium under the clam tank as well...curently im looking for a 40 gallon glass tank that will fit under the clam tank stand I built....

Anything different Ill do the flow will be a mag 7 but with the head loss im expecting about 500 gallons per hour flow through the tank, the plumbing will be hidden under the sand bed...and Ill use just enough live rock, to hide the 5 return lock line nozzels....It will have a lagoon feel to it...with the croceas on the minimal rock work with a few select montaporas.....and softcorals and lps towars the sides of the tank in lower light areas....Im moveing those corals to the clam tank due to space reasons so I can spread out my acros more in the 75.....the maximas will all be on the sand bed...

Benfits are added water volume.....and the system can be taylor made for clams...flow wise....the problems im running into is basic stuff like, drilling the tank, ....most of the work is DIY also....i have droped a link of a tank just like mine that a fellow reef club member is doing.....Oh forgot I will use a PFO mini pendant 250 DE on a PFO sinlge HQI ballast with the 14AC

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=462156 That is a link to my buddys tank, its a carbon copy of mine except my stnand isnt as nice as his.....lol need to buy a jointer for that kind of quality wood work lol

i have a ? about the clam tank... i'm working on one too and want to share my idea with anyone intrested when i finish the project.

my ? is ... why do u have the angle section in the tank? what purpose does it surve?

the tank i'm building is a shallow lagoon type tank that is a 24x24 inch square 10 inchs tall.
one return with a *special* overflow that i will show in action once i get the tank completed.

it's been over build out of 1/2 in acrylic for display purposes. i'm looking to have it water tested within the next month to get the plumbing and pump return/overflow rate set.

it's gonna be plumbed into the sump of my main tank so all this will work as a clam filter for the main display.

i look forward to starting a tread about the setup and function of the tank asap.

the angel section is to see the true colors of the clams without having to look straight down into the tank....

pics hehe :P i mean new pics. not just gallery ones for the clam tank only..

i wonder how one can do a clam tank, in terms of arrangement of rock work.. :)

I am plumbing the 57 gallon clam tank into my sps reef tanks sump, both the sps reef and the clam tank will be side by side. The plumbing will be under the sand, and I will use just enough rock to hide the 5 lock line plumbing nozzels in the clam tank, Ill have a my croceas on the shallow rocks, So the rock formation will basicly be a back wall with a slight horse shoue bend to it. Ill hand a single DE 250 pendant over the tank....and It should have a lower light zone around the edges so I can move what few lps softies and zoanthids out of the sps reef over into the clam tank. as far as pics...I just have the 2 x 4 and 2 x6 frame for the stand built, need to grab some 1/4 inch oak ply wood, molding, some pre fab oak cabinent doors...and a afternnons work should finish the stand after i have it prept for plumbing.
I have a mag 7 for the return pump
I have 100lbs of super fine sized sand.
a PFO single 250 HQI ballast, PFO mini pendant, 14k AC 250 DE
I have some plumbing suppys on the way to my home, still need to purchase some lock line fittings, ball valves and check valves, Ill be ordering soon a 60 gallon cube from glasscages.com and have that riged up as the clam tanks sump/refugium that will inturn drain into the sps/reef tanks sump....so all and all im adding basicly 120 gallons water volume to a 75 sps reef.....More pics will be made once I have supplys in....also my reefclub buddy shiller has the same tank as I do and we are both working on clam tanks at the same time, Its still a pretty expensive project By the time its said and done will have spent over a grand and did a lot of diy to keep costs down....

i haven't ordered my lights yet but have plans on going with a 250 mh pendand 14k also. return is a mag 5 or a mag 7 if needed. i have most everything else already. i'm trying to keep my cost below $750 and it looks like i'm gonna stay with in that mark. but it's still not up yet so well see if i stay withing budget. if all turns out well i'm gonna setup a kit and sell them
