Who has attempted a copperband with their Gigantea?

My gut says NO, don't do that.

I have just started seeing small aiptasia in the tank.

Maybe peppermints are a better solution? But they make me nervous too.

I know I can try to manually get them, but I don't want to risk accidentally burning the nems either.

Or, should I just leave it alone, because Giganteas will win over aiptasia?

I have a copperband that has left leathers alone. (closest thing resembling a nem) not sure if that even counts for anything.

But I think there is not enough space for another fish. I don't dare do something like this for the haddoni tank, and there are small aiptasia in there as well.

Not sure if it helps or not, but I have a pep shrimp in the downstairs tank. The only time it bothered the Haddonis was when I put the solid green one in that tank. The pep bothered it for the first week, but once the Haddoni was settled in (( and stickier )) it stopped. Could try that or Kalk paste --- if you can reach them. Think it would be easier to remove a shrimp compared to a Copperband if there were issues.

I worry about peps for the same reason as copperbands....will they try to eat the nem too?

I'm scared to kalk because I don't want to burn the nems either.

Ahh, well. I guess I'm just chicken. If I leave them alone will the nem win?

There is a chance that peps could, but I think dealing with that would be a lot easier.

If you use a syringe and a small amount (( and that is all that is needed to kill it )), shouldn't effect your "real" nems.

That is a good question, not sure who would win, but I don't think I would want to wait to find out.

not the same but if it help's i have a ~4" copperbanded bf for six years which eradicated aiptasia but hasn't touched the sebae anemone. was in the tank a few years prior to when the anemone was first introduced to the tank at a size a bit larger than a golf ball. they are two very different anemones and i cant say what would happen with S. gigantea.
the latest issue of fama has a article about butterfly fish in sps/lps tanks in which the author claims that "all" butterfly fish including those deemed reef safe by his accounts will pick carpet anemones to death. he didn't specify which or if all species of Stichodactyla but said all butterflyfish and "even the small C. trichrous would pick a S. haddoni to submission"?? i have old underwater footage on vhs of a C. auriga butterflyfish swimming to close, snagged and consumed by a S. haddoni carpet. i think we need to hear from phender and others here on this but i would be more concerned about my 4" C. rostratus being consumed by a S. haddoni than a healthy haddoni "being beat into submission". years ago i put one of my group of C. semilarvatus in a 275g. reef containing a S. haddoni and E. quadricolor. the golden butterflyfish didn't touch them, nor did the racoon C. lunula which it replaced. obviously there are always exceptions and i'm as curious as you to hear others experiences.
fwiw, i tried j.j., kalk paste, injecting murianic acid, boiling h20 and added pepermint shrimp (kept them in check), but the cbbf was the only thing that completely eradicated my aiptasia. your carpet anemones are beautiful 8)
 
I don't know if ALL butterflyfish could do that, but I am sure that more then a handful could pick a fully health Haddoni into submission. I personally have seen a Blue Face angel do it to one that wasn't hosting any clowns. I thought for sure the BF would become an expensive meal, but it was never phased while going after the Haddoni. Lucky enough I had another tank to move the Haddoni to.
 
i don't and didn't doubt that some can and will, i have a issue with what was written in the fama article wrt "all" butterflyfish/carpet anemones.
i also had a blue face angel pick a blue S. haddoni to death back in 1985 when i didn't know any better.
 
I still can't decide! Probably a little safer as trexy said would be the pep-o-mints first.

Since it's an open top I don't want fish jumping out either, which I thought may happen if I introduce another fish in that small of space.

I guess I have to upgrade.......:)

i would be concerned about the pepermints reaching into the anemones mouth and stealing it's food. my pep's did that to my S. haddoni carpet and to the fugia plate corals.
when i first spotted of a few aipatisa i added a few peps to the d.t. which kept them in check to the point where i'd only see one or two very small anemones if any. was after i removed the pep shrimp (because of the above reason), that the population exploded.
pep's tend to eat anything else first. julian sprung had told me it takes a mob of peps to be effective. he rec.'ed 100 of them for my 100g. tank. rather than 100 i put 20 in a 18 gallon bucket, withheld food for a week then alternated peices of the live rock (some had corals attached) in the bucket for three days before returning the rock to the aquarium. the peps ate the aiptasia and the copperbanded butterflyfish finnished the job. been years and they never came back.
if you get a copperbanded butterfly fish i think a 4" or less cbbf will reduce the chances of a problem with the gig. i strongly suggest you only buy one that will eat frozen foods when in the store. most are dif. eaters only and many starve to death after all aiptasia are consumed. i've read mussels on the half shell may help picky cbbf's.
 
My Copperbanded Butterfly has NEVER touched any coral or my 4 RBTA, now he DID have a large feast with my feather dusters and Aiptasia.
 
i have a copperband in with my red carpet and so far no problem --of course it has only been a week -------and i am watching everyday just to make sure
