Hi All,

I was just out with my daughter getting her a few new freshwater fish. I was thinking about the freshwater setups I have had over the years and how I got started in this hobby with my first tank in 1966 (an old stainless frame, slate bottom tank).

I had a freshwater tank almost continuously from 1968 until about three years ago but was thinking of setting one up again.

I was curious how many got started with freshwater and moved to salt? Also how many still have freshwater tanks?

Dave

if I count,like you and I am sure other's also, I started out with freshwater.I think it was a 5 gallon .
an old stainless frame, slate bottom tank.
I was in cub scouts at the time, were are meeting were at someone house.and the had aquariums set-up all over the place.
they may have been breeding some thing? I got the tank and some guppies from them..I am 51 now so you can get an ideal how long I have been at it.
I had saltwater ontil a few months ago. went back to freshwater.
was just getting to cost to much to keep saltwater going.
now running a low tech planted 55gal. and soon a low tech planted 37 gal.

I'm in the same boat as you Dave. I intend on starting up again with freshwater really soon. :)

I kept both for a while but juggling the reef, a male Akita in obedience classes, lizards, mice for the lizards and then a new female Akita pup caused me to get rid of the freshwater. Now that we're down to one lizard that the hubby takes care of, both dogs have matured and I'm easily managing my reef and new dwarf seahorse adventure I think it's time again... :D

started freshwater 13 years ago,Freshwater always has a place in my heart, now saltwater has a hole in my pocket.....

started with fresh 15 years ago... it was in impulse buy.... i went in to buy dog food and came out with a 30g tank, and the rest is history..

at one time i had 8 tanks but now i have 3 - 1 salt, 1 fresh.

I have 6 full grown frontosa in a 125g tank...

I grew up with my mom having a 55 gal freshwater tank. A couple years after I moved into my own house I set up a 55 gal freshwater. About four years after that I upgraded to a new house and a 92 gal corner bowfront for freshwater. About 3 or 4 months ago I started a 125 gal salt water tank. So far I still have both. I have some freshwater fish I would miss too much to get get rid of them, that's why I didn't just convert the 92 gal to salt water.

Think we all started there still have a 55 gallon fresh but Dave I did buy an anchient tank at a yard sale 2 years back with the slate bottom havent desided what to use it for yet only about 2 gallons.Did breed bettas just to see if I could man it's harder than saltwater out of 300 babies and several parents 10 are still alive today they should cost more than they do lol

I have a 125 planted that I had before saltwater. It's still running. I wish there was a local club for freshwater in my hood. My local reef club has a great group right now.

I have had fresh water fish since I can remember. I have 3 very large natural Koi ponds a 55 gallon with assorted FW fish and a 150 gallon with a fresh/brackish water Stingray for the past 5 years.
