Who makes their own food?

I've been feeding my fish and corals with my DIY food for awhile now and find that Squid should be throw in the processor first because they are a little more on the chewy side. It should be more mince then the other food or else your fish will choke (yes choke) :eek1: I have a clown fish that had a big piece of squid in his mouth for a very long time. It was swimming around with the food hanging out of it's mouth.

I just went to a Korean market and got somw good stuff for my food. Wish I could read Korean, there was a lot more interestings stuff there, but I didn't know what it was and couldn't read the label to make sure no preservatives were in it.

I get a mixture of like 8 premade foods (frozen and pellets with garlic and Selcon) and mix it together.

I'd make my own food, but I figure that Formula 1/2 has figured out the right ratios already... why not use it?

I'll have to figure it all out after I make a batch of it. The ratios aren't really a concern, to get a great food for the whole tank, a lot of money involved. The fact that I'll have plenty for more batches makes that easier to swallow. The fresh part of this is really the cheapest.
After feeding my tank a home made food mix the last month or so, I can see an impact, very positive impact on my corals.
And that wasn't using 3/4 of the stuff I'm going to use this week.

Xtrstangx, Yeah that will probably work, but why bother thawing all that food and mixing it? you can just feed one diferent one each time you feed and mix it with the selcon.
Also, you need to be careful when you thaw the comercial formula cause this food will go bad rather quick, you need to work fast to avoid spoiling this food.

I make my own by walking down the seafood isle and picking up any type of raw shellfish, fish fillets, and nori.

Sullyman, I totally agree with you, the positive impact in your tank is seen right away, specially if you have fish that are pron to get ich on a regular bases (tangs) you will see an end to that. the corals get the benefits of this imediately as well as the particles usually reach them at feeding and "exit" times.
I must say, that I don't feed this rich food everyday either, I do the veggie clip every day and feed this homemade mixture every other day together with the veggies.

Here's my reef food, yummy

The red is because of the Cyclopeeze, That looks good, maybe just a liitle too pasty, next time just process the ingredients a little less

Roger, it's the cyclopeeze and the Golden Pearls making it red. The food doesn't have real big chunks, but not real pasty either, the spoon in the pic is the largest one I have, not just a tablespoon.
Cyclopeeze, krill, mysis, rotifers, mussels, plankton, squid, spirula brine, reg. shrimp, scallops, mahi mahi, clams, oysters, red and green sea weed select, selcon, 3 sizes of golden pearls and a couple of secret ingrediants.
If I was feeding larger fish, I may have made it chunkier, but this is for my fish and corals.

Yes my Great, great, great, great, great grandfather had a reef going back on the Old Sod. It's his secret ingrediant, 2nd pic look close, little light orange balls, no not balls, eggs. Hmmmm, fishies like eggs, hmmmmmm..........

wow, you are using the sushi orange fish eggs? that sounds like a good idea, expensive! but if it works why not? how do they do once they freeze and thaw?

I purchased frozen eggs, cod I think, from an Asian food store. Football shaped sacs about 1 1/2" long filled with pinhead sized eggs. Fish like them.

I used both egg sacks and just the eggs in my food. No problems with the eggs being frozen, thawed and frozen a second time.
When I tried the eggs alone to feed, the fish really went nuts for them, and they're large enough to see in the water. The fish cleared the tank in a couple of minutes. I fed them a couple of times that way but I wouldn't recomened doing it all the time. I think it might be too rich/oily for the fish.
I fed the mixture last night and it really went over great, the fish were full but you could still see some of the finer stuff in the water for a while, so the corals were getting theirs too. I used just a small chunk of this stuff and everybody was happy. I figure I'll feed this 3 to 4 times a week and just some nori and brine the other days.
Very happy with the results.
