Who put a Deepwater Coral on the frag tables at the last frag swap?

The container I picked up had a largish encrusted "deepwater acro" on a rock. It was very brown, and that was about it.

The container said "Deepwater acro".

Let me say, I was skeptical about this piece being special other than being brown, but now it's developing amazing color.

It is developing green highlights, purple tips, and white polyps. It's freaking amazing!!! Who's is this? What's the story behind this guy?

This is one of those brown corals that turn into amazingly colorful corals =)

It's starting to grow too. Quite amazing =)

It still looks brown from the side, but top down it's got some serious colors coming out.

Soon. I need to build a top down viewer for my tank to break below the surface. I'm getting massive distortion even if I shoot straight down right now.

The top down viewer is basically a 5 sided box that I mount my camera in, such that I can slightly submerge it so that i'm shooting through a piece of acrylic rather than through the surface of the water.

I'll be making one of those this weekend. 4 sides in black 1/4 inch acrylic, bottom in 3/8 inch lexan. I have all the pieces, just need to put it together.

I got it from Tap plastic. I'll be putting it together tomorrow. I have work today. In total the acrylic was about 23 dollars.

Think it was me. I got it from James at aquascene and it never quite colored up for me but grew very well. I decided to let someone else have a go at it when I was reaquascaping form my move.

very cool! was it colorful when you got it? When it grows up I'll frag you a piece =)

it's looking really good, I'll take a photo when I get back in town in a few weeks.

Yes it was colorful when I got it. It was so long ago I can't remember even what colors it was. It grew very well but just didn't like the old tank for holding its color. Grew it from a 1 inch frag after a while got burried back in my rock work. James told me when I got it it was about 50-50 to keep its color becuase it was a deep water acro.

Art, what bulb is the deepwater on (bulb brand, ballast, temp color)? I'm gonna copy your lighting setup and see if I can bring back the color on some my brown out corals.

africangrey: I have a remote shutter release that's wireless, so that works well. though yes, you don't submerge the camera so you could still press the button =)

bryan: thanks for the info =) I think it's coloring up now, slowly but surely. frag for you when it's ready!

perry: AquaMedic Oceanlight 250watt HQI with their 20K HQI A/B lamp and ballast. Placed about 10 inches away, high flow. It's not too crazy of a setup by any means, but i think the 20K lamp might be one reason for it's success? I'm also getting neat morphs from my zoos too =)

Here's a shot I took with a $2 viewer.

The 2" coupling fits perfectly around most lenses.
