Thinking about adding a 1hp chiller to my system (625g display, 220g sump) looking to see what kind are being used and if you would buy that brand again? I'm only looking for a 10 degree drop max.

I have had a Jbj Artica but that was 10 years ago and haven't had one since. Looking for something I won't have to replace for quite sometime. I have had more than one recommend Aqualogic. Anyone else?

Im running a 1hp AquaEuro USA on my system and its been great! I definitely could have gone with a 3/4 hp.

I run a 1 hp coralife chiller on 600 gallons of total water

4-400W MH over 150 gallons of it (grow out tank) night
3-400w MH over 300 gallons of it (display tank) day
they run opposite lighting schedules

runs @ 33 % duty (chiller is not in same room as the tanks)

+ I keep a brand new spare chiller for backup

+1 for the tradewins. Picked up a 3/4 hp I run about 350 gallons and about to be running 450ish

tradewinds here

Richard,

How do you like your tradewinds chiller? That unit looks very nice for an outdoor install. I have a few questions, I hope you don't mind.
What size volume do you run it on and what model is it?
Also, where did you purchase it and does it come with a Ranco or did you add that on? Lastly, have you had any issues and is it user serviceable?

I currently have a JBJ 1/3HP which has been great but I am upgrading to a 540g DT with around 7-800g total water volume. If I ran a chiller I would go with one that would be External but I am wondering if the chiller is going to cost 2-3K it may be better for me to just install a portable a/c unit in my fish room.

Thanks,
Arman

Hello Arman.
It is new so it still has that sexy look to it. I was going to buy an aqualogic and put it outside like I have in the past. An old friend reminded me of his that he bought 7 years ago.. still no problems. This model is 1.5 horsepower and is oversized for my 650 gallon plus water volume. The unit has a 14 ser rating and runs off of 220. I am waiting still to do the electrical on it. It came with the ranco controller. This is the only unit that I could find that is truly made to be outside. I have never seen anyone's home unit rust away. Made in San Diego but can be service by any hvac guy without him scratching his head while working on it. There are many good chillers out there but if and when they break is the problem. The only major down fall on this is the 15 feet of plumbing I had to hook it up with.

This wasn't cheap though right? I mean none of them are I suppose. I got a quote for a Aqua logic back today and it was for $2100ish before shipping. It uses almost double the power but weighs nearly double other 1hp units at 142lbs. I just don't want to have to buy another in 2 years most importantly. Those who have them how long have you had them?

I found the Tradewind chillers at aquarium specialty, the 1.5 hp which he has is ~$2,700 before shipping and these larger units require freight.

One thing I read on their website which is great is their chillers come with a 2 year warranty, and you have the option of buying I believe 3 additional years of extended warranty.

Having said that, if it did stop working the shipping alone could make it unreasonable to ship it back for service. It is supposed to be serviceable by anyone with basic ac knowledge.

I really like how these units are built to last in an outdoor environment. I just can't have a large chiller like this in my fish room, the exhaust will make the fish room so hot XD

Good point about having to freight ship it back to have service done. The only thing that should ever fail on the units is the compressor, since thats the only thing that is actually moving. The exhaust in the fish room is a concern for me too. Not sure how keen my wife will be about having another outdoor AC unit sitting on the side of our house... Arman, 3 RD3 230w!!!?? I just got one last friday and all I can say is WOW

Also it seems that most all chillers are made to operate between 40-80 degrees for ambient air. In Ohio it gets down to 0 at night in the winter and high 80s to high 90s in the summer. Is the outdoor trade winds unit made to operate outside of 40-80 degrees?

i have had my 1/4 hp Aqua Logic for 4 years running my 281g with 2 400w MH and t5. it is undersized, when i first got it i was running LEDs. in the florida heat it will run 5-6 hours without stopping. i believe i will have to replace it soon, but it is built very strong. i keep it outside!!!

I have an Aqua Euro USA Max Chill 1/4 HP on my 900 gallon system. My tank runs very efficiently so even though it appears way undersized, so far no issues.
