Who uses ozone?

Funny thing, I don't remember this thread. Probably because I stopped using O3 a year or so ago. I loved the results but didn't like the hassle of running carbon 24/7. I never thought you could run O3 without carbon. From reading this thread I guess I was wrong. I'm just about done cycling a new tank and think I'll try running low doses for a couple hours a day; of course I still have the equipment. It'd be great to get the benifits without the down falls.

It has been awesome! I did however decide to stop with the desicant beads as I had to recharge them every 2-3 days!

Was looking into electronic air driers, we will see.

I havent noticed any problems with my T5000 or any of my pumps so far. I think I have been running for about 4 months now. Would have to check my logs though.

DownUnder-Reefer, ozone has been running in my acrylic skimmer for twenty years, no problem. Vinyl air line is a different story.

I run my Red Sea AquaZone plus through the venturi on my ASM G3 skimmer. I figure if I have to replace the needlewheel and/or the pump every few years it's ok. It's better than the hassle of any other options trying to run ozone through the skimmer but bypassing the venturi & pump.

Also, I don't use carbon as I haven't found a decent way to put it over the collection cup. I may just throw a small bag inside the collection cup itself.

I gave up on the desicant beads as well. In Vermont, the beads only last 3 hours!

In this months "Coral" magazine, Richard Harker briefly wrote that judiciuos use of ozone is benificial. The last article also refered to O3.

Brad,

I don't have the magazine, Aside from excellent water clarity, what else did Richard Harker have to say about the use of O3, good or bad?

Also, since you gave up on the desicant beads, are you just not using an air dryer at all? I'm in Montreal, so humidity will be equal to, or more than yours! lol.

I never used any kind of air drier when I was running it in the past and I live in Florida. The AC does run all year round however my tank evaporates about 10 gallons a day into the house.

I actually didn't think that you needed air dryers with the new systems these days. Is anyone out there still using air dryers?

I run my aquazone 200 plus without any desicant beads for five years now it is at 200mL all the time, the only thing i change every year is the norprene hose from the ozonizer to the skimmer.

For you guys with the desicant air dryer....

Recharge or start with new beads,

Then place the airdryer (hooked to the airline) in the largest box you can comfortably fit / hide.

Then fill the box with styrofoam shipping peanuts.

Then close the box.

This will get you a very reasonable use from the beads.

Zoom, have you experience and degrading on the skimmer/pump/impeller? TIA

The skimmer is a Aerofoamer 830 it runs with a beccett injector and the output is at the center of my sump i never had any thing go wrong yet .
Here in S,NJ it is Very humid so the desicant air dryer only works for two hours.

Aug/Sept Coral on page 66, "...judicious use of either or both [O3 and UV] can improve the effectiveness of protein skimming and help control the accumulation of organic compounds and bacteria better than skimming alone. In the coming years I think we will see a more enlightened return to UV and ozone use as we learn more about the conditions in an aging reef."

There is more that is excellent to read. He does say that the goal of skimming+o3 is not to strip the water clean of all organics.

Grim,
The diagram you talk about on the last post of page 14 could you repost it for some reason its not there.
Thanks Pat:(
