Who uses ozone?

I would think organics would have less of an affinity for the air water interface after ozone addtion.Adding o atoms to carbon chains makes them more soluble in water. You actually adding either doubled bonded oxygen(ketone or aldehyde, which form semi-ketones and acid-aldhydes) or hydroxyl groups. What is probably happening is the organics are oxidized to co2 and water. The smaller carbon chain compounds. But i don't see why carbon wouldn't remove these compounds.

OK I agree that you don't need ozone.

I find that the extra clarity it yields, basically the removal of yellowing agents, is far more that what can be achieved with carbon alone. Maybe if you swapped out the carbon every 48 hours you could get close.

I don't use ozone to maintain or bring up my ORP, and pay no attention to it. I use ozone simply to get the most out of the lamps I put over my tank.

the manufacturer usually lists if they can put a ozone fitting on them but other than that ask I assume you'd have to ask. A beckett skimmer is the best as far as I know for using ozone. I'm using www.myreefcreations.com skimmer which has excellent workmanship with no issues.

I'm also running ozone in my MRC skimmer. I talked to Andy about it first and he said there wouldn't be/hasn't been any problems running ozone in his skimmers.

Does anyone use ozone with an ASM skimmer? Are they ozone safe?

That is a good question. I'm not sure. Acrylic skimmers are in general. I dunno that stuff that ASM is made out of.

I don't agree with that. The extra clarity and light penetration that ozone adds is unattainable, IMO, with a skimmer and carbon alone.
I agree with this. In my tank (300 gal) I would need tons of carbon and daily change of it to get close to the clarity of the water that I have with my ozonizer.
I use only a small amount every day, indeed my ozonizer is a 50 mg/hr and I donÃ"šÃ‚´t think I would need a bigger one because so far my water is absolutely clear.

if you try to raise your orp to high or to fast you could lose pods, I run mine at 380 and totally fine. Its the reason I dont run it higher 'with ozone' for fear of having to clean.

Wow. I use 2lbs of carbon a month.
Do you not have to use any carbon if you run ozone?
Thanks
Dave

The answer to that depends on how you run ozone. I used to run a 200mg/hr at 100% and had it turn on and off based on my ORP. I ran carbon because of the amount of residual O3 that would make it back to the tank while it was on. I now run the same ozone generator but dialed down to between 5-10% and keep it running constantly. I've measured for residual O3 and found none. The clarity of the water is the same as it was when I ran it at 100% turning it on and off and I don't run any carbon now. I have a 6 gallon bucket full of carbon that will now last me until 2035 instead of 6 months.

I just got one new/used w/ a controller. Wondering how I know if the probe is good. Supposedly was a new probe but had salt creep in the box :hmm2: My reading (before O3) is 145.

I don't suggest the use of ozone in our sps's tank.

You are putting the question on the clarity of water but we need to concentrate our effort on the water' s chemistry.

Our sps need of clear but very rich water.....not steril.

At least if you want use ozone you have to put in the tank double dose every day of oligoelements and amminoacids and feeding a lot.

This is my opinion

I think people misunderstand what I am talking about when I say I use ozone for water clarity. Others use it to maintain ORP, which IMO is not the best way to use ozone on an SPS tank with lots of life. Low levels of ozone for a few hours a day, or daily, should not effect the tank inhabitants at all. I run my ozone at low levels for about 4 hours a day. When I adjust the ozone level I set it so that the ozone, when running, keeps the ORP from falling, or just falling a little.

IMO using it this way does not create a sterile environment in the tank. My skimmer (where the ozone is injected) had lots of feather dusters and even pods living in it, so I can safely say the ozone is not killing everything when it is running.

I still feel the that ozone makes a big enough impact on water clarity to warrant it's use.
