Who will share an evil laugh with me?

I just fired up the GenX PCX30 (900-1000gph) w/OM Squirt that I had plumbed on my 30 gallon tank.. the 1.5" drain barely handles the flow but all is nice and quiet. Wave action is so strong from all four outlets that water splashes on the floor constantly (this is where the evil laugh comes in). This is going to be a great 30 gallon SPS tank.. I just need to grind down the teeth on the overflow so water level goes down a bit and water rippling stays within the tank..

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Sci,
is it possible for you to vent your overflow? That should help with drainage.

Oh yeah...
Muhuhahahahaha ;)

Chris, please do bring the stuff to nerac. I will have your money by then.

Bill, I'm not sure what you mean by vent but what I ended up doing was grinding down one wall of teeth.. so my 3 sided overflow now has one side completely grinded down.. aside from the fact that my surface skimming tripled from the extra surface area, more water drains on this side (the center side) and causes an upwhelling effect that grabs all the detritus from the bottom of the tank.. solved my splashing problem as well :)

Thanks for the comments.. and all you guys please go to fishy inc and share that evil laugh with les, his new 500 gallon saltwater tank will be plumbed and running this week :)

chris i will have your money this friday. had to do a little buying for my house so used up the money and time.

and ill help with the fish if we can do it early that would be great on friday.

Mike why didn't you just go with a bigger tank from the onset? It's obvious where you are going with this pump/equpiment (whatever that is- Squirt). *grumbles about crushed coral in the tank* I'm surprised the crushed coral is even staying put with that kind of turbulance. I'm sure your doggie is having fun drinking saltwater off the floor- unless you are THAT evil as to be spashing it on the carpet? I would hate to be the one doing your laundry!

Sci/Mike,
By venting the pipe you remove the backpressure that builds up from the vacuum created from no air entering the overflow pipe.

Now that you've ground down the overflow teeth, I'm sure there is even more backpressure in the overflow pipe.

It can be rectified by cutting the overflow pipe in half (in the overflow) and placing a "T" connector to the overflow pipe. Basically a Durso overflow, but you'll want to make the air intake larger to help handle the water.

If you're not following me, I'll draw something up for you in paint and post it.

Bill

Heh, you shouldn't be picking a fight with me Mr. Ghetto Tank!

Actually Doug (you big sexy hunk), put aside all the rhetoric and nonsense I spew and I actually know how to put together a reef tank, quite well.

Mike,
Is the GenX your return from the sump? If so do you want that much flow through your sump? Your skimmer, etc.. can only treat the water at a certain rate anyway. Why not use the GenX/OMsquirt as a closed loop and use a smaller pump for the turnover. Should be much less chance of microbubbles that way, also.
Of course if it's not your return pump, ignore what I said....

Yeah the GenX is the return from my sump and I have a crapload of microbubbles mostly because the sump isnt set up with baffles or anything yet. And the overflow will also feed the skimmer when I set it up later on so it has its purpose.

Bill I could use any help / advice. Here's a picture of how it's set up now:

and a picture of the overflow (before I cut some teeth off):

There's a hole drilled in the top of the T on the outside to let air vent but it's still quite gurgly at times.

Yep, looks like you have a modified Durso on there now.

I would just throttle your pump back.

Unfortunately, with a tank that size, you're slightly limited. Especially when it comes to micro-bubbles. Start cutting those baffles.;)

Get yourself a ballvalve, works everytime.;)

When you setup your sump, you should have ballvalves and quick disconnects before each device attached to the sump/tank. That makes life so much easier if you have to remove equipment or change plumbing.

You can also look here for the durso venting under the build your own and mod sections, enough pictures to explain everything. Also - they had one on there on cutting overflow teeth and using some other screening for more flow...

Speaking opf building your own - I wish I knew where in my new house my new stuff was going to be built - I could start designing my non-ghetto setup.
