But seriously, usually the acro will beat a monti.

The cheaper wins? Then it would be the monti which already seems to be getting the upper hand - and if it wins - I won't be happy.

In my experience Monti can kill anything. If they don't win initially with chemical warfare they will out grow and surround the competition thereby depriving the enemy of life giving light. In my tank I have today I tried desperately NOT to reintroduce purple plating monti that was in my previous reef, but somehow it snuck in and now is rapidly overtaking my entire tank. I will never again introduce plating monti into an SPS tank intentionally.

Caps will overgrow just about any other sps from my experience.

I have had encrusting monti's grow up to an acropora,acro wins and kills some of the monti.With time its like they coexist and the monti heals and just grows around the acro bases,not killing and encrusting it.
